7-Day Lhasa to Everest, Enjoying the Beautiful Scenery of Tibet

Mr. Gaurav commented on
7 Days Lhasa Yamdrok Shigatse Everest Odyssey Group Tour on Jul. 7th, 2024

I recently participated in this 7-day trip from Lhasa to Mount Everest, it was truly an unforgettable experience! The whole itinerary was arranged in a compact and reasonable way, allowing us to fully appreciate the magnificent scenery and unique culture of Xizang in the limited time.

The journey began in Lhasa, where we visited the Potala Palace and Jokhang Temple, experiencing the profound heritage of Tibetan Buddhism. Next, we drove to shigatse, where the blue lake water complemented the surrounding snow capped mountains, breathtakingly beautiful. Taking photos by the lake as a souvenir, every frame is a stunning landscape painting. Subsequently, we went to Shigatse and visited the Tashilhunpo Monastery, which was awe inspiring for its grand scale and exquisite murals. Our stay in Shigatse allowed us to gain a deeper understanding of the history and culture of the Tibetan people. Of course, what I am most looking forward to is the journey to Mount Everest. After a bumpy ride, we finally stood at the base camp of Mount Everest and felt the awe of the world's summit up close. Although the weather was a bit cold, the moment I saw Mount Everest, all my exhaustion vanished into thin air.

Throughout the journey, although the number of people was not large, it allowed us to enjoy the scenery more freely and also made it easier for us to communicate with the tour guide and group members. The professional knowledge and enthusiastic service of the tour guide added a lot of fun to our journey.

A Wonderful Journey: From Old Tingri Town to the Everest Base Camp

Mr. Walker commented on
12 Days Tibet Classic Trek from Old Tingri to Everest Base Camp Tour on Oct. 21st, 2023

My trekking experience in Tibet has been incredibly satisfying and pleasantly surprising. Despite we had made extensive preparations for this trek, I hadn't anticipated experiencing altitude sickness during the initial two days, feeling somewhat under the weather. Thankfully, our guide demonstrated exceptional professionalism in handling such situations, enabling me to quickly acclimate and continue our journey through the Tibetan landscape. As someone who has trekked various terrains, exploring Tibet not only held profound significance but also posed remarkable challenges, yielding even greater rewards. Throughout the journey, I encountered breathtaking landscapes, each leaving an indelible mark on my memory. Among them, spending a night at the Everest Base Camp at 5200 meters stands out prominently. Gazing at the Milky Way from this altitude was a transcendent experience, forging a profound connection with the universe, etching itself as one of the most unforgettable moments of my life. I am immensely grateful to our guide, who exhibited remarkable attentiveness, responsibility, and profound knowledge of Tibet's cultural and natural wonders. It's through his meticulous arrangements that we were able to embark on such a remarkable journey. I am deeply appreciative of his guidance and expertise. If given the opportunity, I would undoubtedly choose Tibet Horizon again. The quality of service, combined with the unparalleled beauty of Tibet, makes it a destination I eagerly anticipate revisiting.

Deeper Understanding in Tibet Train Tour - Guangzhou & Lhasa & Everest & Namtso

Mr. Robert commented on
12 Days Guangzhou Train to Lhasa Shigatse Everest Base Camp and Namtso Lake Tour on Feb. 4th, 2023

I recently completed a 12-day tour and I couldn't be more satisfied. This journey brought me many new and exciting experiences. Thanks to our knowledgeable guide, I gained a deeper understanding of Tibet's culture and history. We visited several iconic sites, including the historic Potala Palace, the traditional home of the Dalai Lama. Walking through its halls, I felt a deep connection to the rich history of this place. The Jokhang Temple was another highlight, where witnessing the devotion of the Tibetan people was truly moving. The most memorable part of the trip was our visit to Everest Base Camp. Seeing Mount Everest up close and experiencing the sunset and sunrise at the base camp was absolutely breathtaking. The majesty of the world's highest peak left me in awe. The company's service was excellent throughout the trip. Our guide was not only knowledgeable but also incredibly attentive and helpful. When I experienced mild altitude sickness, our guide quickly provided me with an oxygen bottle and useful advice, which helped me recover quickly. The logistics were well-organized, and every detail was taken care of, ensuring a smooth and enjoyable experience. However, the only drawback was the long train journey from Guangzhou to Lhasa. While the views were stunning, the travel time felt increasingly exhausting as we neared Lhasa. Next time, I might choose a closer city to take the train from or opt for a direct flight to Lhasa. In all, it was a fantastic journey, and I am grateful for the effort and care provided by these staff. I highly recommend this tour for anyone looking to explore Tibet.

We Made an Incredible Self-driving Tour from Chengdu to Tibet: Nyingchi and Lhasa

Mr. Yang commented on
11 Days Sichuan-Tibet G318 (Chengdu to Lhasa) Overland Self Drive Tour on Sept. 9th, 2023

Incredibly, we completed this 11-day self-driving trip to Lhasa. We started from Chengdu, Sichuan, and then headed to western Sichuan. The autumn scenery in Xinduqiao was stunning with its golden poplar trees and fiery red maple leaves, creating a vibrant canvas of colors. The Jinsha River showcased nature's craftsmanship with its magnificent canyons, rugged peaks, and rich biodiversity. The most perilous part was the Seventy-Two Bends. This section of the road had almost no straight lines, consisting entirely of sharp curves and hairpin bends, with steep terrain and narrow paths. Combined with the unpredictable weather of the Tibetan plateau, driving through this segment was a thrilling experience for all of us. After overcoming numerous challenges, we finally arrived in a paradise on earth - Nyingchi, Tibet. The autumnal valleys of Lulang Forest were blanketed with a riot of colorful leaves, creating a picturesque scene. Cattle and sheep grazed leisurely on the golden grasslands of the pastures. At Mount NamchaBarwa, the autumn dawn revealed a breathtaking sight as the sunlight pierced through the clouds, casting a golden glow that intertwined with the snowy peaks. This journey was absolutely worth it. Our self-driving trip allowed us to truly appreciate the wonders of nature. Of course, we encountered many difficulties along the way, such as issues with refueling the car. However, the fact that we successfully reached Lhasa and witnessed so many beautiful landscapes is all thanks to the assistance from Tibet Horizon. They were truly worth choosing and made our trip unforgettable.

Drawing from my decade of local guiding experience, the following Tibet travel guides will help you easily explore Tibet’s spiritual heart and breathtaking landscapes.

Tibet Tour FAQs Concluded by Me

1. Is it safe for foreigners to travel to Tibet?

Yes, traveling to Tibet is very safe for foreigners, provided you travel with a licensed agency that manages mandatory permits and provides professional guides. These organized group tours ensure your safety through 24/7 support, expert altitude acclimatization pacing, and emergency medical supplies like oxygen and first-aid kits.

2. How to plan a perfect Tibet tour?

Planning a perfect trip to Tibet is simple if you follow these three steps:

Step 1: Plan Your Vision. Identify the attractions and destinations you wish to visit based on your personal travel preferences and interests.
Step 2: Choose Your Transportation. Select the best way to reach Tibet—by flight for speed or by train for scenery—depending on your schedule and preference.
Step 3: Organize Your Itinerary. Join one of our expertly designed "Tibet Small Group Tours" or contact us to customize a private journey for a more personalized and unforgettable experience.

3. What documents are needed to travel to Tibet?

To travel to Tibet, you primarily need a valid passport (with at least 6 months validity) and a Chinese Visa. The most critical document is the Tibet Travel Permit (TTP), which must be arranged by a licensed travel agency, as independent applications are not allowed. Depending on your itinerary, you may also require an Aliens’ Travel Permit and Military Area Entry Permit for sensitive regions such as Mount Kailash.

4. What is the best way to get to Tibet?

To travel to Tibet, you primarily have three options: flight, train, or road.

Flying is the fastest method, with direct flights to Lhasa from major Chinese cities and Kathmandu, making it ideal for those on a tight schedule.

The Qinghai-Tibet Railway offers a scenic journey with oxygen-supplied carriages. Overland travel (usually from Nepal or Sichuan) provides the ultimate adventure through diverse Himalayan landscapes.

The "best" option depends on your priorities: flying is best for saving time, but the train is highly recommended for its breathtaking plateau views and affordability. Many travelers choose a "fly-in and train-out" combination to experience the speed of air travel and the iconic scenery of the world's highest railway without overextending their itinerary.

5. What are the must-see attractions in Tibet?

As a local guide, I recommend visiting the Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple, Yamdrok Lake, Everest Base Camp (EBC), and Mount Kailash. These places show you Tibet’s rich culture, stunning landscapes, and deep spiritual traditions.

6. When is the best time to travel to Tibet? What is the peak season for Tibet tourism?

The best time to visit Tibet is from April to October. The weather is stable, the temperatures are pleasant, and the scenery is beautiful. It is the ideal time to explore attractions like the Potala Palace and Jokhang Temple. Holy lakes such as Namtso and Lake Yamdrok also show their most stunning views during this season.

From November to March, winter is also a good time to visit Tibet. Compared with spring and summer, winter travel is more affordable. Flights, hotels, and entrance tickets are usually cheaper, giving visitors a more budget-friendly experience.

7. Do I need to book a tour to Tibet in advance? How far in advance is appropriate?

Yes, you must book your Tibet tour in advance because independent travel to Tibet is not permitted for foreigners. A licensed Tibet travel agency needs time to process your mandatory Tibet Travel Permit, which is required to board your flight or train.

It is best to book at least 30 to 45 days before your departure. This ensures ample time for permit processing, especially for restricted areas like Mount Everest or Mount Kailash, which require additional travel and military permits.

8. How much does it cost to travel to Tibet? What's the minimum budget?

The cost of traveling to Tibet varies based on your itinerary and travel style, with all-inclusive group tours being the most budget-friendly option. For a 2026 trip, a popular 8-day Lhasa Yamdrok EBC tour typically starts from $767. If you are planning the sacred 15-day Mount Kailash pilgrimage, the tour package starts at $1,778 per person.

To keep costs low, participating in a "Small Group Tour" is highly recommended, as it allows you to share the expenses of the mandatory guide, vehicle, and driver with other travelers. Traveling during the low season (November to March) can also save you up to 20% on tour prices and accommodation compared to the peak summer months.

9. What to eat in Tibet? Where should I stay?

For a taste of authentic Tibetan food, you can try Yak meat dishes, Momos (Tibetan dumplings), and Thukpa (hearty noodle soup). Don’t miss the chance to visit a local teahouse for Sweet Tea or traditional Butter Tea, which are central to Tibetan social life.

In Lhasa, I recommend staying near Barkhor Street or the Potala Palace in a Tibetan-style boutique hotel to immerse yourself in the local atmosphere. As you travel to remote areas like Mount Everest or Mount Kailash, accommodations become more basic, typically consisting of simple guesthouses or tent hotels with shared facilities, so it is best to prepare for a more rustic experience.

10. Will I definitely experience altitude sickness if I go to Tibet? What should I do if I experience altitude sickness?

Not everyone experiences altitude sickness, but most travelers will feel mild symptoms like a light headache or shortness of breath as their body adjusts.

Serious altitude sickness is rare if you follow a gradual acclimatization schedule, stay hydrated, and avoid strenuous exercise during your first 48 hours in Lhasa.

If you do experience symptoms, the most important rule is to inform your guide immediately. Most mild cases are easily managed with rest and supplemental oxygen, which we provide in our vehicles and hotels.

For more persistent symptoms, your guide will assist with medication or, if necessary, arrange a quick descent to a lower altitude to ensure your safety.
