  • Mrs. Abarca from Spain, asked on August 7th, 2024

Lhasa Gonggar Airport Facilities for Altitude Sickness

I've heard that the airport in Lhasa is at a high altitude. I’m worried that my mother, at the age of 65, may experience altitude sickness upon landing in Lhasa. What facilities and services do the Lhasa Gonggar Airport offer to assist passengers who might be affected by the altitude, and are there any oxygen supply stations or medical assistance available at the airport?

Mr. Tenzin Jamphel from Tibet Horizon, answered on August 7th, 2024

Dear Abarca, thank you for extending your question to us!

Lhasa Gonggar Airport, situated at a high altitude of 3,500 meters (11,500 feet), is well-equipped to assist passengers who may experience altitude-related discomfort. Upon arrival, the airport offers a range of services to help travelers acclimate. The airport provides ample seating areas where passengers can rest and recover from any initial effects of the high altitude. It has oxygen supply stations where passengers can take short breaks to breathe supplemental oxygen if needed. There are medical facilities or at least medical personnel on-site to provide immediate assistance in case of altitude sickness or other health issues. Besides, traveling with us, our expert local guides will meet you at the airport and transfer you to the hotel to rest.

It's important to remember that every individual reacts differently to high altitudes, and while some may feel fine, others might need a little extra time to adjust. The airport's facilities, combined with a gradual approach to activity and proper preparation, can help mitigate the effects of altitude sickness. If you have further questions, feel free to contact us!
