Frequently Asked Questions

  • Mrs. Chen from Singapore, asked on November 11st, 2023

Questions on Local Transportation by Foreigners

Hi, there are several questions I am confused about transportation. Would you like provide more information with me. I wonder how extensive is the public transport in Lhasa City? And can foreigners use public transport to get to places in Lhasa City? If yes, Is it still necessary to hire a guide if we were to move around on our own?

Mr. Tenzin Jamphel from Tibet Horizon, answered on November 11st, 2023

Dear Chen, thank you for your inquiry about transportation in Lhasa City. We are pleased to provide you with detailed information.

Lhasa has a well-developed public transportation system that includes buses and taxis. The bus network covers most parts of the city, making it accessible for both locals and tourists. There are also dedicated routes that connect major tourist attractions within the city.

Foreigners can use public transport in Lhasa. Modern buses operate on more than 20 routes around the city. Although bus stops can be a little hard to find initially and information boards may only list major stops, buses run every 20 minutes on each route. The information is not in English, so some prior research with your guide is recommended. However, the buses are cheap, with most routes costing just 1-2 yuan. While you can use public transport to move around Lhasa, it is mandatory for foreigners to have a guide when traveling in Tibet, including Lhasa.

Should you have any more questions or need further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us.

  • Mr. Mertens from Belgium, asked on August 23rd, 2022

Whether the altitude will be a problem for the kids

Hi, we are planning a trip to Chengdu and were hoping to include Lhasa as part of our trip.We are travelling with some younger children ages 4 and 8.I was wondering whether the altitude will be a problem for the kids. We would envisage spending about three nights after visiting Chengdu.

Mr. Tsering Wangdue from Tibet Horizon, answered on August 23rd, 2022

Dear Mertens, thank you for reaching out us. Traveling to Lhasa, situated at an altitude of about 3,650 meters (12,000 feet), can pose challenges due to the high altitude, especially for young children. Altitude sickness can affect anyone, and young children may have difficulty expressing their discomfort. Watch for symptoms like headaches, nausea, dizziness, and shortness of breath.

To mitigate these risks, ensure your children stay well-hydrated, rest adequately, and avoid strenuous activities upon arrival. Gradually ascending to higher altitudes before reaching Lhasa, if possible, can also help their bodies adjust. We strongly recommend consulting with your pediatrician for personalized advice and preventive measures.

With careful planning and the right precautions, traveling to Lhasa with young children can be safe and enjoyable. If you have further questions or need assistance with your travel arrangements, please don't hesitate to contact us. We are here to help ensure you have a safe and memorable trip.
