Tibet Travel Guide Written by Me
In addition to helping travelers plan their Tibet journeys, I summarize the questions they care about most and write practical Tibet travel guides. These guides cover a range of useful information, itinerary planning, travel time, and pre-trip preparations, to help you explore Tibet more easily.
Tibet Tour FAQs Concluded by Me
No. Foreign travelers cannot visit Tibet independently and must book your trip through a Tibet travel agency. However, this does not mean you have to join a group tour. You can choose a private tour tailored to your interests and schedule, or join a small group tour to reduce costs.
There are three main ways to enter Tibet from Nepal. You can either take a direct flight from Kathmandu to Lhasa, which is the fastest and most convenient option. Or travel overland through the Gyirong Border. While the overland route offers spectacular Himalayan scenery, it also involves a significant increase in altitude over a short period. To reduce the risk of altitude sickness, we recommend choosing an itinerary that allows for gradual acclimatization before reaching higher elevations in Tibet. There is also a more exciting option: taking a helicopter to the Purang Border to enter Tibet. This option also requires extra caution regarding altitude sickness.
Most Kailash Mansarovar tours take about 10 to 15 days, depending on your departure point and itinerary. This timeframe allows you ample time to acclimatize to the high altitude, visit other highlights, including Lhasa and Mount Everest, and complete the traditional 3-day Kailash Kora. If you have more time, you can opt for a longer itinerary.
Tibet boasts numerous unforgettable natural landscapes, among which the Potala Palace and Jokhang Temple in Lhasa are unmissable. As the most representative landmarks of Tibet, they showcase its history and allow you to experience Tibetan Buddhist culture.
If you love natural scenery, then Yamdrok Lake, Namtso Lake, and the Everest Base Camp are worth a visit. The azure lakes and magnificent snow-capped mountains together create Tibet's most classic landscape.
For tourists with ample time, Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar are also ideal destinations. Mount Kailash is revered as a sacred mountain, attracting numerous pilgrims to circumambulate it every year, with Lake Mansarovar carrying profound religious significance.
Generally speaking, there are no strict age restrictions for traveling to Tibet. Whether you are a child, adult, or senior, as long as you are in good health, you can travel to Tibet. In fact, many families travel to Tibet with their children every year, and quite a few tourists aged 60 or even 70 have completed their trips to Tibet with our assistance.
However, because Tibet is at a high altitude, age is not the key factor determining whether you can travel to Tibet; health condition is more important. If you have serious heart disease, high blood pressure, respiratory system diseases, or other similar conditions, it is recommended that you consult your doctor before departure.
During your trip to Tibet, you can enjoy authentic Tibetan cuisine, a wide variety of Chinese cuisine, and some Western dining options. In major cities like Lhasa, Shigatse, and Nyingchi, there's a good variety of restaurants, and it's easy to find Sichuan cuisine, noodles, and vegetarian options.
If you want to experience local specialties, try traditional Tibetan dishes such as butter tea, yak meat, Tibetan noodles, tsampa, and sweet tea. These foods not only have a rich Tibetan flavor but also offer a way to understand the local culture. Yak meat is popular for its delicious flavor, and tea houses are a great place to experience the local atmosphere in Lhasa.
It's recommended to choose light, easily digestible foods at the beginning of your trip, drink plenty of water, eat fruits and vegetables, and avoid overeating.
Tibet boasts a unique religious culture and customs, and respecting local traditions is crucial when traveling there. When visiting temples, do not touch Buddha statues, ritual implements, or scriptures without permission, and avoid wearing shorts, short skirts, or sleeveless tops.
When passing prayer wheels and stupas, walk clockwise, as this is an important custom in Tibetan Buddhism. Also, do not step on prayer flags, mani stones, or other religious objects.
Furthermore, when interacting with locals, please avoid touching their heads, as the head is considered sacred.
Yes, Tibet is a safe destination. The local public security is good, and major cities and scenic areas are well-ordered, allowing you to complete the trip smoothly and enjoyably. The same applies to foreign travelers; as long as you arrange the itinerary through a Tibet travel agency and abide by local regulations, you will not encounter any safety issues.
No. Foreign travelers are not allowed to stay in Tibet after their tour concludes. If you wish to stay longer in Tibet, you can communicate with us before departure to extend your itinerary or add destinations based on your time and interests. We will arrange guides, vehicles, and travel procedures according to the new plan to ensure your trip complies with local regulations.
Yes, we can help you book train and flight tickets to Tibet. Whether you plan to depart from Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, or other major Chinese cities, we can provide booking assistance based on your itinerary. However, a service fee usually applies.
