Tibet Travel Guide Written by Me
Those Tibet travel guides are based on my years of hands-on experience planning Tibet journeys for international travelers. It covers essential routes, seasonal insights, accommodation advice, cultural etiquette, and practical high-altitude preparation - from Lhasa and Everest Base Camp to Mount Kailash. Whether you’re joining a group tour or planning a private trip, those guides help you travel to Tibet with clarity, confidence, and realistic expectations.
Tibet Tour FAQs Concluded by Me
Normally, the Tibet Travel Permit takes around 8-15 working days after we receive your complete documents. If you are from a visa-free country, only a passport copy is required. If you need to apply for a China Visa, we will begin the Tibet Travel Permit application once your visa is issued.
We monitor the approval process carefully and advise you on the best timeline to book your flights or train tickets. In most cases, the process is smooth and predictable.
We recommend booking at least 1-2 months in advance. If you want to travel to Tibet during peak seasons (April–October), it should be earlier.
A deposit is required to secure your preferred travel dates, start the Tibet Travel Permit application, and reserve hotels and vehicles. The remaining balance can usually be paid before arrival or upon arrival in China (depending on arrangements). Booking in advance not only ensures availability and facilitates our permit process smoothly, but also allows you to enjoy a more favorable price.
Yes. Tibet is considered very safe for international travelers. Tibet has a relatively stable social environment, and tourism activities are under regulated management. For foreign tourists planning to visit popular areas such as Lhasa, Shigatse, Nyingchi, or Mount Kailash, as long as you obtain the necessary permits (such as the Tibet Travel Permit) and travel with a guide, the overall travel experience is safe and secure.
Altitude affects people differently. Some travelers may feel mild symptoms (headache, light fatigue) during the first 1–2 days. Serious altitude sickness is rare if the itinerary is well planned.
To minimize risk, we recommend that you first arrive in lower altitude areas of Tibet, such as Lhasa and Nyingchi, to fully acclimatize before gradually moving to higher altitudes. Also, avoid rushed schedules, stay hydrated, rest properly, and avoid strenuous exercise.
No. Independent travel is not permitted for foreign passport holders. According to regulations, international travelers must arrange their itineraries with a licensed Tibet travel agency and be accompanied by a guide throughout the trip. However, this does not mean your Tibet trip lacks flexibility. We can design a private and personalized itinerary for you within the regulations.
Tibet tour packages typically include services for obtaining the Tibet Travel Permit and other necessary permits, guide and driver services, accommodation during the trip, and entrance fees to attractions. You only need to provide a scanned copy of your passport and your China Visa page (if required), and we will handle the entire application and approval process to ensure your permits are complete before your trip begins.
A Tibet tour cost depends on several factors, including the duration, the season, and whether it's a group tour or a private tour. Generally, an 8-day tour of Lhasa and Mount Everest is relatively affordable. If the itinerary extends to areas like Mount Kailash, the overall cost will increase due to longer travel times and accommodation issues. During the peak season, when hotel and transportation resources are limited, prices are slightly higher.
I usually clearly list the included and excluded items when providing a quote. Our package prices are transparent and predictable, and there will be no hidden charges.
Yes! Most foreign travelers come to Tibet specifically to participate in the Kailash Kora. As long as you are in good health, you can join the Yatra. Generally speaking, the difficulty of the Kailash trekking mainly comes from the high altitude. With sufficient acclimatization and a well-planned itinerary, the entire journey is safe. However, we still recommend consulting a doctor beforehand and not blindly heading to Kailash without any preparation.
There are three main ways to travel to Tibet: by plane, train, and road. The fastest way is to fly directly to Lhasa Gonggar Airport. Major domestic cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, and Chongqing all have direct flights.
If you prefer a more scenic journey, you can take the Tibet train to Lhasa. Tibet trains depart from Xining, Chengdu, or other major cities, passing through magnificent landscapes such as grasslands, snow-capped mountains, and lakes. Although the journey takes longer, it allows you ample time to acclimatize to the high altitude. Alternatively, traveling along the G318 highway from Chengdu to Tibet also offers a different kind of adventure.
You can depart from Kathmandu and enter Tibet through Gyirong or Zhangmu Border. Along the way, you can not only enjoy the magnificent scenery of the Himalayas but also experience the unique Tibetan culture and customs. Additionally, you can choose to fly directly from Kathmandu to Lhasa for a faster and more convenient option.
