A Trip Full of Surprises to Mount Everest

Mr. Tan commented on
8 Days Lhasa Shigatse Everest Base Camp Anniversary Tour on Oct. 15th, 2023

Having spent over a year in China as international students, my partner and I have roamed through the ancient streets of Xi'an, trekked the lush landscapes of Yunnan, and marveled at the grandeur of Beijing. Yet, the mystique of Tibet beckoned us with its enchanting allure, teasing us through online videos and travel tales. Thus, to mark our anniversary, we embarked on the 8-day Tibet journey, and what an odyssey it turned out to be! splendor Our journey began with the historic Potala Palace, its towering façade a testament to Tibet's rich cultural heritage. We wandered through its labyrinthine halls, mesmerized by the intricate murals and sacred relics that whispered tales of bygone eras. As we ventured further, the azure waters of Yamdrok Lake greeted us, casting a spell of tranquility upon our souls. The Khumbum Stupa in Gyantse stood as a majestic monument to Tibetan Buddhism, its intricate architecture leaving us in awe of the artisans' skill. But it was our night at Everest Base Camp that left an indelible mark on our hearts. As the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in hues of crimson and gold, we stood in silent reverence before the world's highest peak. And when darkness enveloped the camp, revealing the Milky Way in all its celestial splendor, we felt an overwhelming sense of connection to the universe. Amidst these grand spectacles, it was a simple gesture from our guide that touched us most deeply. Over a steaming cup of yak butter tea, he shared stories of his homeland, weaving a tapestry of tradition and resilience that left us humbled and inspired. In the end, as we bid farewell to Tibet, we carried with us not just memories, but a profound sense of gratitude for this once-in-a-lifetime journey. Our guide's sincere blessings and expert guidance made every moment unforgettable.

Tibet Train Journey to Beijing, Xian, Lhasa and EBC

Mr. Gurung commented on
on Oct. 21st, 2023

Embarking on such a twelve-day adventure was an absolute delight for someone like me, who revels in exploring diverse cultures. From the bustling streets of Beijing to the historical marvels of Xian, and finally to the enchanting landscapes of Tibet, each day unfolded like a page from a captivating storybook. Standing atop the Great Wall in Beijing, I was awestruck by the sheer magnitude of human ingenuity that built such a monument. Transitioning to Xian, the silent guardians of the Terracotta Warriors and Horses whispered tales of ancient emperors and their conquests, painting a vivid picture of bygone eras. Yet, it was in Tibet where the journey truly took my breath away. Surrounded by prayer flags fluttering in the thin air, the spiritual ambiance of the Potala Palace embraced us, offering a glimpse into the rich heritage of Tibetan Buddhism. The serene Yamdrok Lake mirrored the vastness of the azure skies, while the rugged beauty of the Karola Glacier left me speechless in front of nature's grandeur. Despite the remoteness of our destinations, the tour company ensured that every aspect of our journey was seamless. Our guide are not just knowledgeable but also passionate storytellers, bringing each site to life with colorful anecdotes and historical insights. The skilled drivers maneuvered through challenging terrain with ease, ensuring our safety at every turn. This journey was more than just a sightseeing trip; it was a transformative immersion into the heart and soul of China's diverse landscapes and cultures. Thanks to the impeccable service provided by Tibet Horizon, every moment was filled with wonder and discovery, leaving me with cherished memories that will last a lifetime.

Tibet Tour FAQs Concluded by Me

1. Can foreigners travel independently in Tibet, or do I need a guide?

No. All foreign travelers are required to book an organized tour through a registered Tibet travel agency, which includes a mandatory guide, vehicle, driver, and pre-arranged itinerary, and you must have an authorized Tibet Travel Permit to enter.

2. What permits are needed for foreign tourists to travel to Tibet?

Foreign tourists traveling to Tibet must hold a valid China Visa (except for those from countries eligible for visa-free entry) and a Tibet Travel Permit. If you are planning to visit Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar, an additional Aliens’ Travel Permit and Military Area Entry Permit are required. A Tibet Travel Permit can only be obtained through a Tibet travel agency like us.

3. What is the best time to visit Tibet for sightseeing and trekking?

The best time to visit Tibet is from April to October, when the weather is mild and the skies are clear, making it an excellent time for photography, trekking, and spiritual journeys.

Additionally, November to March is also a good time. Prices are more favorable with discounts on hotels and flights. However, it's important to note that Mount Kailash cannot be visited in winter.

4. How many days are recommended for a Tibet tour?

The ideal length of a Tibet trip depends on your destination and desired experience. For travelers with limited time, a 5-9 day trip focuses on Lhasa, Everest Base Camp, and Natmso Lake, allowing you to experience rich Tibetan culture in a compact itinerary.

If you prefer a more comprehensive journey, a 10-15 day trip can include a visit to Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar.

A trip of 16 days or more is ideal for travelers seeking an in-depth Tibet experience, where you can fully appreciate its breathtaking natural scenery, profound spiritual heritage, and unique traditional culture.

5. How to get to Tibet from the Chinese Mainland or Nepal?

You can choose to travel to Tibet by plane or overland. The most common option is to fly from major cities like Beijing, Chengdu, or Shanghai to Lhasa Gonggar Airport, which provides quick access to Lhasa and surrounding attractions. You can also take a train from cities like Xining or Chengdu to Lhasa, enjoying the stunning scenery along the way. Alternatively, you can travel to Lhasa from Chengdu along the famous G318 National Highway.

From Nepal, the most convenient route is by overland, starting from Kathmandu and entering Tibet via the Gyirong Border. This route is popular with travelers heading to Everest Base Camp and Mount Kailash. You can also choose to fly from Kathmandu to Lhasa.

6. What should I pack for a Tibet tour?

Tibet has a high altitude, large temperature differences, and strong ultraviolet radiation. Essential items include warm, multi-layered clothing, a windproof jacket and thermal underwear, sunglasses, sunscreen, and a hat. Additionally, it's advisable to bring altitude sickness medication and some basic first-aid supplies. For pilgrims traveling to Mount Kailash, it's also recommended to bring a lightweight backpack and hiking gear.

7. Is altitude sickness common in Tibet, and how can you prevent it?

Yes, altitude sickness is common in Tibet due to its high altitude. Symptoms may include headache, nausea, and dizziness. To prevent it, it's important to have enough time to acclimatize, drink plenty of water, get rest, and avoid strenuous exercise. You can also take medication before your trip. Don't worry, I will provide you with practical advice during your journey to help avoid altitude sickness.

8. What are the must-see landmarks for a first-time Tibet traveler?

Tibet offers a unique combination of cultural, spiritual, and natural landscapes for first-time visitors. In Lhasa, the iconic Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple, and Barkhor Street are essential for experiencing Tibetan history, architecture, and local culture. In Shigatse, Tashilhunpo Monastery and Mount Everest are absolute must-sees. If you wish to delve deeper into Tibet, the sacred Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar offer a profound spiritual experience.
