Nyingchi, Tibet: 4-Day Odyssey Through a Paradise of Natural Wonders

2025-06-19 written by Chloe Ong Comments

It's been almost a week since I returned from Tibet, but my thoughts still linger on that plateau. Tibet is a mysterious treasure land, with so much to be explored and savored carefully. I only stayed there for 4 days, which was too brief to experience its natural beauty fully. My understanding of Tibet is too shallow, and I'm unsure how to begin recording my journey, fearing that my writing skills won't be able to convey its unique beauty.

Day 1: Nyingchi - Gala Peach Blossom Village - Lulang

There are connecting flights from Singapore to Nyingchi, with a transfer at Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport. I arrived at Nyingchi Mainling Airport at 11 a.m. Due to the limited vacation time, I didn't have time to rest on my first day in Nyingchi. Right after getting off the plane, I headed straight to the first stop of my trip—Gala Peach Blossom Village.

Here, peach trees grow wildly all over the mountains. They sway in the spring breeze, and pink petals flutter down like snowflakes, turning the entire village into a pink ocean. As I walked through the peach grove, the faint fragrance of flowers lingered at the tip of my nose, and the gentle breeze caressed my cheeks. Under the pink peach blossoms, there were green seedlings, and in the distance, there were snow-capped mountains. The collision of warm and cold made me keep pressing the shutter, trying to freeze every moment.

After leaving Gala Peach Blossom Village, we went to Sejila Mountain Pass. Namcha Barwa Peak is the highest mountain in Nyingchi, with an altitude of 7,782 meters. The mountaintop is often shrouded in clouds and mist, and it's very difficult to see its full view. The sight of the golden mountain at sunrise is even rarer. It’s said that only one in ten people is lucky enough to see it. Unfortunately, we weren't among the lucky ones. The locals told us that there had been a lot of rainy days recently, and the golden mountain at sunrise couldn't be seen during this period.

So, with a bit of regret, we headed to Lulang for dinner and accommodation after tasting Tibetan sweet tea. The warm and hospitable Gongbu Tibetan family had been waiting for a long time. At the host's warm invitation, I rolled up my sleeves and made sweet tea and pancakes with them. During dinner, everyone sat around and tasted delicious Tibetan cuisine, and laughter and chatting echoed in the room. After the meal, I also tried the traditional archery activity. Although I wasn't very good at it, I had a great time. This day ended in a happy and harmonious atmosphere.

Day 2: Lulang - Bomi Peach Blossom Valley - Gangyun Forest - Ranwu Lake

On the second day, we set off from Lulang and headed to Bomi Peach Blossom Valley. In the early morning, the Lulang Forest was covered by a thin layer of mist. I strolled in the forest, breathing in the fresh air, listening to the birds singing, and feeling the beauty of nature. After leaving the Lulang Forest, we soon arrived at Bomi Peach Blossom Valley. The peach blossoms in Bomi are the most beautiful and wildest in Nyingchi. The beauty is so overwhelming, making it impossible to resist being enchanted.

After leaving Bomi Peach Blossom Valley, we went to Gangyun Spruce Forest. The tall and straight spruce trees blocked out the sky and the sun, and the ground was covered with a thick layer of moss. I walked carefully, afraid of disturbing the tranquility. In the forest, I felt the magic of nature and the tenacity of life. Everything here was full of life and vitality.

In the afternoon, we arrived at Lake Ranwu. The Lake Ranwu area is a huge glacial valley formed by glaciation in different periods. Whenever the ice and snow melt, the snow water flows into the lake, so Lake Ranwu always has an abundant water source. The colors of Ranwu Lake are rich and varied. The grassland, forest, blue lake water, and snow-capped peaks form a picturesque world. I walked along the lake, enjoying the lake view and the mountains. Here, I forgot all my troubles and fatigue, and my soul was relaxed like never before.

Day 3: Laigu Glacier - Lulang

On the third day, we went to Laigu Glacier. Before arriving at Laigu Glacier, what came to my mind was “Mann Planet”, the second planet Cooper reached in Interstellar--cold, desolate, beautiful, vast, and boundless, with the world covered in ice and snow. It’s a place that humans shouldn't easily reach.

The hike into Laigu Glacier was an unforgettable journey. Along the way, there were rare beautiful sceneries: glaciers, barrier lakes, and snow-capped mountains. For tourists who have lived in the busy city for a long time, everything in front of them seemed like a different world, bringing a strong sense of surprise and shock. Finally, we reached the glacier’s foot. The huge glacier stretched out like a mountain -- bold, wild, free, and untamed. It showed its beauty not for anyone. It just wanted to be in this beautiful form, flaunting its splendor in this paradise.

Following the guide, we looked for the fascinating blue ice cave. After climbing up a slope beside the ice valley and catching my breath, I found that there was a different world behind the slope. It was as if the mountain had suddenly split open, and the ice water on the rock wall formed a waterfall pouring down, echoing in the valley. Under the cover of messy rocks, there was an iceberg. When I felt dazzled, the guide reminded me to go down the slope carefully. There was a row of roughly chiseled ice steps, like a hanging ladder. I walked carefully and intently. Just around the corner, before we could even get ready, the blue ice cave suddenly appeared in front of me. The V-shaped cave wall was entirely blue, just like a perfectly crafted ice sculpture tent. Walking inside, the glacier was like entering a crystal palace in a fairy tale. The meltwater on the ice wall trickled down, and the transparent ice branches crisscrossed, shimmering like the bottom of the sea. At that moment, I forgot myself, as if the world had come to a standstill, with only the refreshing drops of water falling from above. At the entrance of the glacier, I looked back once more. At the end of the glaciers, the still water of Lake Ranwu glistened like stars.

Day 4: Lulang - Basumtso - Lhasa

On the fourth day, which was also the last day of this trip, we set off from Lulang and went to Basumtso Lake, which is known as the "Little Switzerland of the East". The water of Basumtso Lake was crystal clear. The snow on the surrounding mountaintops hadn't melted, and the vegetation on the mountains was vertically distributed. From the lush green at the foot of the mountain to the sparse vegetation halfway up the mountain, and finally, to the snow-covered mountaintop, it was magnificent. Here, you can see typical Tibetan landscapes, with snow-capped mountains, blue lakes, and green forests perfectly blending together. I visited the local temple and learned about Tibetan religious culture. After leaving Basumtso Lake, we began the journey back to Lhasa. Although I felt reluctant to leave, this Tibet trip left a deep impression on me.

Although this 4-day trip to Tibet was short, I fell deeply in love with this land. The natural scenery was like a beautiful poem, and the simplicity and kindness of the Tibetan people made me feel extremely warm. I know that this trip is just the beginning. In the future, I will definitely come back here to explore every corner of Tibet in-depth and experience more of its charm.
