  • Mr. Vyane from Belgium, asked on August 27th, 2024

    Xinjiang-Xining-Tibet Train Journey Recommended?

Is it possible that I take a train from Urumqi to Xining and then transfer to the train to Lhasa? Is this trip recommended?

Mr. Karma from Tibet Horizon, answered on August 27th, 2024

Dear Vyane, thank you for extending your question to us! It is possible to take a train from Urumqi to Xining and then transfer to a train to Lhasa.

From Urumqi to Xining, the time duration is approximately 10-20 hours, depending on the train. The journey offers views of the vast landscapes of Xinjiang, including deserts and mountain ranges. And Xining-Lhasa train takes around 22-24 hours. This segment is particularly spectacular as it traverses the Tibetan Plateau. The train crosses high-altitude regions, offering stunning views of snow-capped peaks, vast plains, and unique landscapes.

The train ride is renowned for its breathtaking views and is considered one of the most scenic train journeys in the world. If you enjoy scenic travel, this route will be a memorable part of your trip. However, this trip will be time-consuming, taking more than 30 hours. If you will explore Xinjiang’s landscapes first, you can choose to fly to Xining to save time and energy and prepare for your Tibet train ride. If you have further questions, feel free to contact us!

Xinjiang and Tibet Weather in October

I plan to visit Xinjiang and Tibet in October. How's the climate and temperature? What should I wear during the trip?

Mr. Passang Norbu from Tibet Horizon, answered on July 23th, 2024

Dear Muller, thank you for extending your question to us.

October in Xinjiang is generally cool and pleasant, with temperatures ranging from 5°C to 20°C (41°F to 68°F). The weather can vary depending on the region, with cooler temperatures in the northern areas and warmer in the south. During your trip in Xinjiang, you can dress in layer. Bring a light jacket or sweater for cooler mornings and evenings, and comfortable clothing for daytime.

October is one of the best times to visit Tibet, with clear skies and temperatures ranging from -5°C to 15°C (23°F to 59°F). The weather is generally dry, but it can be quite chilly, especially in the evenings and at higher altitudes. It’s also recommended to bring warm jackets, hats and gloves for colder temperatures at higher altitudes

In both regions, it’s crucial to prepare for a range of temperatures and weather conditions, as they can change rapidly. If you have further questions, feel free to contact us!

  • Mr. Shin from Malaysia, asked on July 7th, 2024

Phone Reception & Internet Access in Remote Areas

How reliable is mobile phone reception and internet access in these remote locations like Mount Kailash and EBC?

Mr. Tenzin Jamphel from Tibet Horizon, answered on July 7th, 2024

Dear Shin, thank you for extending your question to us!

Mobile phone reception and internet access in remote locations like Mount Kailash and Everest Base Camp (EBC) can be quite limited. At Mount Kailash, reception is generally very sparse. Most areas around Mount Kailash have little to no signal. You might get intermittent service depending on your provider and location, but it's not guaranteed. At EBC, reception may be better but still unstable. Internet access is available at EBC but can be slow. Therefore, consider using local SIM cards with roaming capabilities or checking with your mobile provider about connectivity options in these areas before traveling.
