Shigatse is a city located in the Tibet Autonomous Region of China. It is situated in the southwestern part of the region and is the second-largest city in Tibet after Lhasa, the capital. Shigatse is known for its historical and cultural significance, as well as its proximity to Mount Everest, the highest peak in the world. The city is approximately 280 kilometers (175 miles) west of Lhasa and lies at an elevation of around 3,840 meters (12,600 feet) above sea level.
