Challenging but Worthwhile in Lhasa, Everest Base Camp and Namtso

We did a ten-day group tour. What captivated us the most were the awe-inspiring sunrises and sunsets, as well as the mesmerizing Milky Way we witnessed at Everest Base Camp. These celestial displays were unforgettable moments that added a magical touch to our trip. While the journeys to and from these locations were challenging at times, the scenic beauty and natural wonders made it all worthwhile. The accommodations provided by Tibet Horizon were excellent, and the local cuisine was delicious. We couldn't have asked for a more dedicated and friendly guide than Mr. Tseten Namgyal, who went above and beyond to make our journey special. Highly recommend Tibet Horizon for a fulfilling Tibetan experience!

Standing under the dark sky of Everest, I felt relax and leisurely.

In May of Namotso, it expressed more sacred.

After baptism of the dark sky, we appreciated the sunrise of Everest, showing a holiness for us.

Tour Tips:

Knows before You Book:

1. Travelers to Tibet should have a moderate physical fitness level. Patients with serious hypertension, heart disease, asthma, bronchitis, diabetes, and cold should be restricted from traveling to Tibet.

2. Book at least 20 days in advance so the tour operator may have enough time to apply for and deliver your Tibet Travel Permit. Normally, it takes around 8-9 days to process your Tibet Travel Permit from the Tibet Tourism Bureau and another 3-4 days to deliver your Permit to your address in Chinese mainland.

3. A Tibet train/flight ticket is not included in our tour package. If you book with us, we can help you book your train/flight ticket. The train ticket to Lhasa is normally issued 15-60 days before departure. During peak seasons (from June to mid-October, during the Chinese Spring Festival and other public holidays in China), train tickets may be issued only 1-9 days before departure.

4. Price is based on double occupancy. Solo travelers who prefer to stay in a room by themselves need to pay for the additional charge of single room supplement. Please consult our travel consultants for specific prices.

5. Your airport/train station pick-up and drop-off in Lhasa needed to be arranged by the tour agency as foreign visitors are prohibited from independent traveling.

6. If you plan to travel to Lhasa via Kathmandu, please do not apply for a China L Visa in advance. You need to apply for a Tibet Group Visa from the China Embassy in Kathmandu via a travel agency. If you have your China L Visa, it will automatically expire when applying for a Tibet Group Visa.

7. Please read the Payment Methods, Terms and Conditions, and Cancellation policies before you book.

Knows after You Book:

1. Please provide photocopies of your passports and China L visas at least 15 days before the travel date, making sure we have enough time to apply for your Tibet Travel Permit. If you have other type of visas, please contact your travel consultant.

2. Make sure to bring warm and comfortable clothing and walking shoes for your Tibet trip.

3. It is recommended to bring spending cash for the whole trip. In Lhasa, you can withdraw money with a foreign bank card or change your foreign currency into Chinese Renminbi (RMB, CNY).

4. Travel insurance is provided by The People’s Insurance Company (Group) of China Limited (www.epicc.com.cn), which covers tourist accident risks only in China. Tourists are recommended to purchase additional insurance on their own.

5. Altitude Sickness is a common reaction in the plateau. Common symptoms include fatigue, insomnia, loss of appetite, headache, etc. Normally such symptoms will disappear in 2 days. You’d better consult your doctor and bring some medicine, such as ibuprofen, acetaminophen and nutrient supplements.

Do not photograph military facilities, and other politically sensitive areas; Do not accept any news media interview; Do not collect secret intelligence; Do not wave antisocial banners, yelling antisocial slogans; Do not use aerial cameras; Do not venture into areas beyond planned itineraries.

7. Souvenirs like knives, antiques, animal skulls, etc. are not allowed to be taken out of China at customs. Please don’t buy this kind of souvenir.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Mrs. Dumont from France, asked on March 18th, 2024

    Kathmandu, Lhasa, Beijing Travel Route

We plan to fly to Kathmandu in Aug for a short tour of Nepal. After that we want to visit Lhasa and Beijing. Which is a better route to take - is it better to take Kathmandu - Lhasa -Beijing -Kathmandu OR Kathmandu - Beijing - Lhasa -Kathmandu?

Mr. Tashi Wangyal from Tibet Horizon, answered on March 18th, 2024

Dear Dumont, thank you for reaching out with your travel plans. We're excited to help you with your itinerary.

Based on your plan to visit Kathmandu, Lhasa, and Beijing, it would be more efficient to follow the route Kathmandu - Lhasa - Beijing - Kathmandu. This route prevents backtracking and makes the most of your travel time. Additionally, it simplifies your visa process. Traveling from Nepal to Tibet requires a special type of Chinese visa, which you must obtain in Kathmandu. This visa will replace any other Chinese visa in your passport, so it's best not to apply for a regular Chinese visa beforehand.

If your travel dates are flexible, you might consider spending several days in Tibet beyond Lhasa, as it's a unique opportunity to explore this remarkable region. Depending on your schedule and budget, you can either take a train from Lhasa to Xining and then fly to Beijing or fly directly from Lhasa to Beijing. We recommend allowing at least four full days to explore Beijing before your onward journey.

Should you have any further questions or need assistance, please don't hesitate to contact us. We're here to ensure you have a wonderful and smooth trip.

  • Mr. Mayr from Germany, asked on September 27th, 2023

    Lhasa Weather in November

We are traveling to Lhasa from Kathmandu at the end of November (via air, not overland). What can we expect for weather in Lhasa? Just wondering what the temperatures will be like (day and night) and whether we can expect snow.

Mr. Kalsang Rinchen from Tibet Horizon, answered on September 27th, 2023

Dear Mayr, thank you for reaching out with your travel plans. We’re delighted to assist you with your journey from Kathmandu to Lhasa.

At the end of November, you can expect the weather in Lhasa to be quite cold. Daytime temperatures typically range from 5°C to 10°C (41°F to 50°F), while nighttime temperatures can drop significantly, often falling to around -5°C to -10°C (23°F to 14°F). Snow is possible, especially in the higher elevations around Lhasa, but significant snowfall in the city itself is less common. It’s always best to be prepared for cold weather with warm clothing, including layers, a good quality coat, gloves, and a hat.

If you have any further questions or need assistance with your travel preparations, please don't hesitate to contact us. We're here to ensure you have a wonderful and smooth trip.
