  • Miss Kaur from New Zealand, asked on July 16th, 2024

    Traveling from Shanghai to Tibet

Hi! I want to take a train to Tibet cuz riding on the sky railway must be a lifetime experience. From Shanghai, however, the train journey takes around 47 hours. Is there a better choice?

Mr. Passang Norbu from Tibet Horizon, answered on July 16th, 2024

Dear Kaur, thank you for extending your question to us.

Taking a train to Lhasa offers unparalleled experience indeed. However, the train speed is lower than that of flights and high-speed railway. The train Z164 travel from the east to the west of China, covering 3,757km and naturally the travel time is long. It may be boring and even tolerating for some tourists. If you want a Tibet train ride without suffering from such a long travel time. You can fly from Shanghai to cities like Chengdu, Xi’an and Xining and then take a train to Tibet. The distance is much shorter and these sections capture the most stunning scenery along the railway.

  • Mr. Walsh from Ireland, asked on May 8th, 2024

7-Day Trip too Long for the Seniors?

Hi! I’m looking for a tour package suitable for my grandparents. My grandmother is 67 years old and my grandfather is 71. Is this 7-day trip too long for them to take?

Mr. Tenzin Jamphel from Tibet Horizon, answered on May 8th, 2024

Dear Walsh, thank you for extending your question to us!

Traveling to Tibet with an average altitude of over 4,000 meters is challenging for tourists, including the seniors. The biggest problem is the altitude sickness but it had little to do with the age. The key is to take enough time to acclimate and ascend slowly. This 7-day trip covers central Tibet, taking you to Lhasa, Tsedang, Shigatse, and Gyantse. The altitude is relatively low compared with EBC and Ngari Prefecture. Besides, our travel path is slow, reducing the risk of altitude sickness. Therefore, this trip won’t be too long. On the contrary, it’s well-planned, giving you enough time to appreciate the natural and cultural splendors and adapt to the environment.

    Cloths for China Tibet Trip

Hello! What cloths to bring for China Tibet journey? Any suggestion appreciated.

Mr. Kalsang Younten from Tibet Horizon, answered on April 18th, 2024

Dear Nieminen, thank you for extending your question to us.

Traveling in China, you’ll encounter diverse landscapes and quite different climate in different cities. Situated at a high altitude, the ultra violet in Tibet is strong, so you can bring sun protection jacket as well. You can tell our travel consultant your planned travel time and we can check the temperatures of cities for you.

  • Mrs. Dumont from France, asked on March 18th, 2024

    Kathmandu, Lhasa, Beijing Travel Route

We plan to fly to Kathmandu in Aug for a short tour of Nepal. After that we want to visit Lhasa and Beijing. Which is a better route to take - is it better to take Kathmandu - Lhasa -Beijing -Kathmandu OR Kathmandu - Beijing - Lhasa -Kathmandu?

Mr. Tashi Wangyal from Tibet Horizon, answered on March 18th, 2024

Dear Dumont, thank you for reaching out with your travel plans. We're excited to help you with your itinerary.

Based on your plan to visit Kathmandu, Lhasa, and Beijing, it would be more efficient to follow the route Kathmandu - Lhasa - Beijing - Kathmandu. This route prevents backtracking and makes the most of your travel time. Additionally, it simplifies your visa process. Traveling from Nepal to Tibet requires a special type of Chinese visa, which you must obtain in Kathmandu. This visa will replace any other Chinese visa in your passport, so it's best not to apply for a regular Chinese visa beforehand.

If your travel dates are flexible, you might consider spending several days in Tibet beyond Lhasa, as it's a unique opportunity to explore this remarkable region. Depending on your schedule and budget, you can either take a train from Lhasa to Xining and then fly to Beijing or fly directly from Lhasa to Beijing. We recommend allowing at least four full days to explore Beijing before your onward journey.

Should you have any further questions or need assistance, please don't hesitate to contact us. We're here to ensure you have a wonderful and smooth trip.

Mr. Tashi Wangyal from Tibet Horizon, answered on March 12th, 2024

However, if your visit does not align with the Saga Dawa Festival, there are still plenty of other popular festivals in Tibet that you can experience. For example, Losar (Tibetan New Year), Shoton Festival (Yogurt Festival), and Tibetan Horse Racing Festival are among the most significant ones. These festivals often feature vibrant ceremonies, traditional dances, horse racing, and other cultural performances.

    The Shigatse-Gyantse portion worth doing?

Hi, can you tell me if the Shigatse-Gyantse portion worth doing? I can't decide between the 4D Lhasa only tour or the 6D Lhasa-Shigatse-Gyantse tour. Is Sh-Gy a rough trip and how is the sanitation situation?

Mr. Tseten Namgyal from Tibet Horizon, answered on March 8th, 2023

Dear Rossi, thank you for your inquiry regarding your travel plans in Tibet.

The Shigatse-Gyantse portion of the tour is indeed worth considering. This route offers some of the most breathtaking scenery and significant cultural sites in Tibet. Gyantse is home to the famous Pelkor Chode Monastery and the unique Gyantse Kumbum, while Shigatse features Tashilhunpo Monastery, the traditional seat of the Panchen Lama.

If you prefer a more relaxed pace and want to focus on exploring Lhasa's rich historical and cultural sites, this option of 4 days in Lhasa is suitable. You'll have more time to immerse yourself in the city's highlights without the added travel. For those who want to experience a broader range of Tibetan landscapes and culture, this extended tour of 6-day Lhasa-Shigatse-Gyantse tour is ideal. Buy Diamox in Lhasa or bring it with me?

I learned online that Diamox can help alleviate altitude sickness. I would like to know if this medication is available for purchase at pharmacies in Lhasa, or if I should bring it with me?

Mr. Kalsang Rinchen from Tibet Horizon, answered on March 18th, 2023

Dear Garcia, thank you for your inquiry. Diamox is indeed known to help alleviate altitude sickness. However, it's essential to note that Diamox typically needs to be started one to two days before your trip.

While pharmacies in Lhasa may carry Diamox, it's not always readily available, and you may need to consult a doctor at a hospital to obtain it. The train from Chengdu to Tibet

We plann to travel by train to Lhasa this June/July but are finding it nearly impossible to get tickets from Xining, with potential extra fees. We won't know the price or availability until after we leave. Can we stop somewhere and fly to Chengdu instead, as 48 hours on the train is too long?

Mr. Lhakpa Tsering from Tibet Horizon, answered on February 26th, 2022

Dear Andersson, thank you for reaching out with your inquiry about traveling to Lhasa by train.

Traveling by train to Lhasa is indeed a unique and memorable experience, but it can be challenging to obtain tickets, especially during peak travel seasons. This option can significantly reduce your travel time while still allowing you to experience part of the scenic train journey.

We offer ticket booking services and can assist you with arranging your itinerary to ensure a smooth and enjoyable trip. Shigatse in late December worth visiting?

Hi, we are planning a visit to Lhasa in late December and we are wondering whether going to Shigatse is a good idea in terms of the views, weather and the time it takes from Lhasa since we will only spend 6 days in Lhasa. We are also considering doing few one day trips from Lhasa, any must sees? thanks!

Mr. Passang Norbu from Tibet Horizon, answered on November 6th, 2021

Dear Russia, thank you for considering us for your trip to Lhasa in late December.

Regarding Shigatse, late December can bring cold weather and challenging road conditions due to snow. However, if you are prepared, Shigatse offers scenic winter views. The journey from Lhasa to Shigatse takes about 5-6 hours by road.

For one-day trips from Lhasa, consider these destinations: Namtso Lake: Stunning natural scenery and spiritual significance, about 5 hours from Lhasa. Yamdrok Lake: Turquoise waters and snow-capped mountains, closer and more accessible. Ganden Monastery: Historic monastery with beautiful mountain views, close to Lhasa. Tsedang: Historical sites like Yumbulagang Palace and Samye Monastery, a bit farther but doable in a day.

These spots offer great experiences within a day's journey from Lhasa. If you need more details or assistance, feel free to contact us. We can help tailor your itinerary for a memorable trip.

Any advice on the trip Lhasa to Kathmandu

Hi there I'm planning a trip arriving Lhasa and finishing in Kathmandu. Any advice on who to fly with for cheapest price? Are there any particular days they fly out?

Mr. Tenzin Sherab from Tibet Horizon, answered on February 15th, 2021

Dear González, thank you for reaching out us. To provide you with the most accurate information, could you please share your estimated travel dates with us? This will help us determine the best options for flights and provide you with more reliable

1.If you have around 8 days, you can drive from Lhasa to the Nepal border via Everest Base Camp (EBC). From there, you can take local jeeps to Kathmandu. Please note that currently, the road near the Nepal border is damaged by landslides, but if your trip is next year, this may not be a problem.

2.If you're short on time, you can fly from Lhasa to Kathmandu. While the direct flight by Air China is a bit expensive and not available daily, China Eastern Air sometimes offers excellent discount tickets. They fly from Lhasa to Kunming and then from Kunming to Kathmandu, sometimes at half the cost of the direct flight. However, the availability and pricing of connecting flights can vary depending on several factors.

Once we have your estimated travel dates, we can provide you with more specific flight options and recommendations. Please feel free to contact us if you have any further questions or need assistance with your travel arrangements.

Questions on Local Transportation by Foreigners

Hi, there are several questions I am confused about transportation. Would you like provide more information with me. I wonder how extensive is the public transport in Lhasa City? And can foreigners use public transport to get to places in Lhasa City? If yes, Is it still necessary to hire a guide if we were to move around on our own?

Mr. Tenzin Jamphel from Tibet Horizon, answered on November 11st, 2023

Dear Chen, thank you for your inquiry about transportation in Lhasa City. We are pleased to provide you with detailed information.

Lhasa has a well-developed public transportation system that includes buses and taxis. The bus network covers most parts of the city, making it accessible for both locals and tourists. There are also dedicated routes that connect major tourist attractions within the city.

Foreigners can use public transport in Lhasa. Modern buses operate on more than 20 routes around the city. Although bus stops can be a little hard to find initially and information boards may only list major stops, buses run every 20 minutes on each route. The information is not in English, so some prior research with your guide is recommended. However, the buses are cheap, with most routes costing just 1-2 yuan. While you can use public transport to move around Lhasa, it is mandatory for foreigners to have a guide when traveling in Tibet, including Lhasa.

Should you have any more questions or need further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Whether the altitude will be a problem for the kids

Hi, we are planning a trip to Chengdu and were hoping to include Lhasa as part of our trip.We are travelling with some younger children ages 4 and 8.I was wondering whether the altitude will be a problem for the kids. We would envisage spending about three nights after visiting Chengdu.

Mr. Tsering Wangdue from Tibet Horizon, answered on August 23rd, 2022

Dear Mertens, thank you for reaching out us. Traveling to Lhasa, situated at an altitude of about 3,650 meters (12,000 feet), can pose challenges due to the high altitude, especially for young children. Altitude sickness can affect anyone, and young children may have difficulty expressing their discomfort. Watch for symptoms like headaches, nausea, dizziness, and shortness of breath.

To mitigate these risks, ensure your children stay well-hydrated, rest adequately, and avoid strenuous activities upon arrival. Gradually ascending to higher altitudes before reaching Lhasa, if possible, can also help their bodies adjust. We strongly recommend consulting with your pediatrician for personalized advice and preventive measures.

With careful planning and the right precautions, traveling to Lhasa with young children can be safe and enjoyable. If you have further questions or need assistance with your travel arrangements, please don't hesitate to contact us. We are here to help ensure you have a safe and memorable trip.

Some questions on different price between Chinese and foreigner

Hello, I study in Shanghai and I'd like to make a tour in Tibet. I know I need Tibet entry permit. I just wonder, why the trip to Tibet for Chinese is twice cheaper that foreigners. If you could help me and recommend good way how to get there and don't ruin my student budget I would be really appreciate.

Mr. Tseten Namgyal from Tibet Horizon, answered on July 11th, 2023

Dear Costa, thank you for reaching out us. The difference in pricing typically stems from several factors. Firstly, Chinese citizens can travel independently in Tibet, while foreign visitors are required to be accompanied by a private guide and vehicle, which significantly increases the cost. Additionally, the cost of transportation within Tibet, especially for long-distance drives, can be quite expensive due to the rugged terrain and remote locations.

To help you stay within your student budget, we recommend considering alternative transportation options such as taking a train to Lhasa from Shanghai, which is generally more budget-friendly compared to flying. You can also save money by booking your train ticket in advance.

Visit Lhasa with my Chinese wife

Hi, I'm planning to visit Tibet in January 2025 for a couple of weeks. I'm a British citizen living and working in China with a Z visa and Chinese residence permit. My wife, a Chinese national, will join me. I understand I need permits, but I'm unsure about the group travel requirement. I prefer to explore at my own pace with my wife, not as part of a group. Any advice would be much appreciated!

Mr. Karma from Tibet Horizon, answered on March 3rd, 2023

Dear López, thank you for your inquiry! Visiting Tibet in January offers a wonderful opportunity to experience local culture and traditions, with fewer tourists and more local Tibetans on spiritual pilgrimages to Lhasa. This provides a chance to interact with locals and immerse yourself in authentic Tibetan culture.

Regarding your question about traveling independently without being part of a group or tour, it's important to note that according to the Tibet Tourism Bureau policy, travelers must book their Tibet tour with a local tour operator to obtain the necessary permits. Additionally, a guide will be arranged for you during your stay in Tibet, and if you plan to travel outside of Lhasa, you'll need to hire a car and driver, as foreigners are not permitted to use public transportation.

However, with a reputable tour operator, it's possible to plan a flexible itinerary that allows you to explore at your own pace, especially after completing the day's activities. A good operator will ensure that your trip meets your preferences and interests while also complying with local regulations. Feel free to contact us for further assistance in planning your trip.

Ride a motorbike from Malaysia to Tibet

Hi, we plan to ride a motorbike from Malaysia to Tibet. I wonder Which route has easier accessibility, entering through Kathmandu/ Bhutan or Yunnan (China). Secondly, which has a more scenic route? Thank you in advance.

Mr. Lhakpa Tsering from Tibet Horizon, answered on October 13th, 2022

Dear Schneider, thank you for reaching out us. In terms of accessibility and scenic routes, the best option would be entering Tibet from Kathmandu, Nepal. This route offers easier accessibility compared to entering through Yunnan, China or Bhutan. For a scenic and adventurous journey, entering Tibet from Kathmandu allows you to explore iconic destinations such as Mount Everest Base Camp or further west to Mount Kailash. The road from the Gyawala pass to Everest Base Camp offers breathtaking landscapes and exhilarating twists and turns, making it a favorite among motorbike enthusiasts.

However, it's important to note that driving a foreign motorcycle into China requires specific permits, including an import permit, Chinese license plates, and a Chinese driving license. Additionally, traveling in Tibet requires a Tibet Travel Permit, and there are limited routes available for foreigners to enter Tibet overland.

    Tibet Trek Preparations

Hi there, I'm wondering if there's any special gear or equipment I need to bring for trekking to Mount Everest and Mount Kailash. It's going to be my first trekking trip in Tibet, and I've heard that many people experience altitude sickness there, so I want to be extra prepared for any unexpected situations.

Mr. Tsering Wangdue from Tibet Horizon, answered on December 25th, 2023

Dear Claus, thank you for reaching out with your question.

When it comes to equipment for trekking, it's generally recommended to bring along appropriate gear such as sturdy hiking boots, waterproof clothing, layers for changing weather conditions, a good quality backpack, trekking poles for stability, and a first aid kit. While some basic equipment may be available for rent in Lhasa or provided by the travel agency, it's often more convenient and reliable to bring your own gear. As for dealing with altitude sickness during the trek, it's essential to acclimatize properly by taking your time to ascend gradually and staying well-hydrated. Age Limit for Kailash Mansarovar Yatra

I wonder if there is a formal age limit for Kailash Mansarovar Yatra for Indian pilgrims. One of the members in our group is 74 years.
    I have two related questions:
    1. Is there an age limit for issuing the chinese visa for Mansarovar- Kailash Yatra
    2. Is there a separate age limit imposed by chinese officials or tour organisers for the Kailash Parikrama alone.
    Thank you for your help.

Mr. Tenzin Jamphel from Tibet Horizon, answered on December 21st, 2023

Dear Verma, thank you for reaching out with your inquiry regarding the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra.

Typically, there isn't a formal age limit for issuing a Chinese visa for the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra. However, visa approval is contingent upon meeting certain health and safety requirements, given the challenging nature of the journey. It's advisable for elderly pilgrims to undergo thorough medical examinations and obtain a fitness certificate from a qualified doctor.

For the Kailash Parikrama, Chinese officials and tour organizers often impose age and health restrictions due to the high altitude and physical demands of the trek. Generally, those over the age of 70 may be subject to additional scrutiny and might be advised against participating in the Parikrama, depending on their health status. Cultural Event in October

Hello, we will be in Lhasa Oct 19, 20 and 21, 2024, and would like to know of any cultural events we could see or participate in - for example, nearby festivals, concerts, dancing, etc. Would prefer "authentic" experiences rather than the "Culture Shows" put on for the tour buses.

Mr. Karma from Tibet Horizon, answered on September 19th, 2023

Dear Lee, thank you for reaching out to us regarding your upcoming visit to Lhasa. We're delighted to assist you in making your trip as enriching and enjoyable as possible.

During your stay in Lhasa on October 19th, 20th, and 21st, there are no major Tibetan festivals scheduled. However, there are several significant cultural events in the months surrounding your visit that you might find interesting:

    1. Bathing Festival (Karma Dunba): This festival, which occurs in early September 19th, 2024, is a unique cultural event where locals believe that bathing in rivers during this time can wash away all sins and diseases. It's a fascinating insight into Tibetan beliefs and customs.

    2. Lhabab Düchen: Celebrated on November 22nd, 2024, this festival commemorates the Buddha's descent from heaven. It's an important day in Tibetan Buddhism, with various religious ceremonies and pilgrimages to sacred sites.

While there are no specific festivals in Lhasa during your exact dates, you may still have the opportunity to experience local culture through visits to significant landmarks such as the Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple, and Barkhor Street. These sites are vibrant with local traditions, prayers, and daily rituals, providing an authentic glimpse into Tibetan life.

If you have any further questions or need assistance with planning your activities, and authentic experience in Lhasa.
