Day 2: Lhasa bird watching tour

After breakfast, you will go to watch the bird from the Lhalu Wetland and take picture of birds. Lhalu Wetland National Nature Preserve is the largest natural urban wetlands in the world. It is not only the main natural oxygen bar in Lhasa but also a heaven for hundreds of species of wetland birds.

Then you will head out of the city to the banks of the Lhasa River, which is one of the most popular places in Tibet for the migratory black-necked cranes (a rare and endangered species of crane that winters on the marshes and rivers of the area). It is a great place to view and study these unique birds in their natural habitats. The driver will also bring us a pleasant drive along the Lhasa River, where you will have a brief stop to enjoy the Lhasa valley while photographing the birds nearby.

In the afternoon, drive back to Lhasa Zongjiao Lukang Park for the bird watching. This park is a favorite place for locals to get their daily exercise. It also becomes the home of thousands of black-headed gulls, Ruddy Shelducks and Bar Headed Geese from November to around the middle of March every year. The scene of the gulls hunting for food or just lazing on the waters of the small lakes with the Potala behind is an amazing shot.

  • Mr. Souza from Brazil, asked on March 28th, 2024

Traveling to Tibet from Qinghai, by Train or Flight?

Hello! I’m planning a Qinghai-Tibet tour during bird migration season in September. From Qinghai Province to Tibet, which way do you recommend? By flight or train?

Mr.Kalsang Rinchen from Tibet Horizon, answered on March 28th, 2024

Dear Souza, thank you for extending your question to us.

Traveling from Qinghai to Tibet, you can either take a flight or a train. Flying to Tibet is a faster choice. It only takes around 2hrs 10mins. Taking a Tibet train is also a popular choice. Riding on the highest railway in the world, you can immerse yourself in the stunning views along the way. The whole train journey takes 20-22 hours. If you want to save time, you can choose to go to Tibet by air. If you want to enjoy more natural beauty, you can choose to take a train.
