Truly Immersive Experience to Walk around the Barkhor in Tibet: Travel in the Lhasa City

I really enjoy the 3-day Lhasa tour although the time was very short. I still remember when our guide took us on a leisurely walk around the Barkhor, he shared fascinating insights into local customs and traditions, allowing us to experience life in Lhasa like the locals. We had the opportunity to interact with shop owners, sample local snacks, and even try our hand at spinning prayer wheels. It was a truly immersive experience that left a lasting impression. If you came Lhasa without visiting Potala Palace, it can’t be called a complete itinerary. Stepping into its majestic halls filled with centuries of history was awe-inspiring. Our guide's detailed explanations brought the palace to life, and we left with a deeper understanding of Tibetan Buddhism and culture. This tour offered a perfect introduction to Lhasa's rich cultural heritage. I highly recommend it to anyone looking to explore the heart of Tibet, especially for those whose time is limited.

Vibrant Culture and Rich History of Lhasa

With limited time, the short itinerary provided a glimpse into the vibrant culture and rich history of Lhasa. The tour was well-paced, allowing us to explore the city's iconic landmarks at a leisurely pace. The historic Potala Palace was a sight to behold, with its imposing structure and intricate artwork. Stepping inside felt like stepping back in time, and our guide's insights added depth to the experience. The Jokhang Temple was equally impressive, for the temple's architecture was breathtaking, and the atmosphere inside was peaceful and serene. It was suggested to stroll around the Barkhor, soaking in the bustling atmosphere and colorful sights. We had the chance to mingle with locals, browse through traditional shops, and witness daily rituals. In all, the tour offered a wonderful introduction to Lhasa's cultural heritage. And I am extremely grateful for the efforts paid by Tibet Horizon.

Many Tibetans are buying and selling things at Barkhor Street.

    Festivals of Tibet in August

I'm planning to travel to Tibet in August. I read on a website that there's a horse racing festival in Nagqu during August. I'm wondering if there are any other festivals in August besides this one. Could you provide me with some information about it? Also, can foreigners participate in these festivals?

Mr. Tsering Wangdue from Tibet Horizon, answered on January 5th, 2021

Dear Smith, Thank you for your inquiry.

In August, Tibet hosts several vibrant festivals. One of them is the Nagqu Horse Racing Festival, will be held in August 10-15th. This festival showcases thrilling horse races, traditional Tibetan dances, and cultural performances, offering a unique glimpse into Tibetan nomadic culture.

Additionally, Lhasa celebrates the Shoton Festival, will occur in August 4-10th this year. This festival marks the end of monks' summer retreat and features the unveiling of a giant Thangka painting of Buddha, along with Tibetan opera performances and the enjoying of yogurt delicacies. These festivals provide an excellent opportunity to immerse yourself in Tibetan culture and traditions. If you have further questions or need more information, please feel free to contact us. • Mrs. Marianne from France, asked on June 17th, 2020

The train from Beijing to Lhasa

Hello, my husband and I are looking into the option of taking the train from Beijing to Lhasa this October. The issue I'm having is that my husband is not so keen on bunks in the cabin to make it private? Our other option is flying in, but my preference would really be to see some of the scenery!

Mr. Tenzin Jamphel from Tibet Horizon, answered on June 17th, 2020

Dear Marianne, Thank you for consulting us for your travel plans to Lhasa this October.

For a more personalized experience, you can opt for a Soft Sleeper Cabin, which allows you to reserve all four berths. This ensures privacy for you and your husband throughout the journey, offering a more comfortable and tailored experience compared to sharing with strangers. While flying is a quicker option, train travel allows for a more relaxed journey, affording you the chance to stretch your legs, move around, and fully appreciate the changing scenery outside your window.

To book your tickets, it's advisable to do so well in advance, particularly for travel during peak seasons like October, when demand is high. Our ticketing services can assist you in securing the private cabin option, ensuring a smooth and hassle-free booking process. If you'd like to proceed with booking train tickets or require further assistance with your travel arrangements, please feel free to contact us. Our team is dedicated to ensuring you have a memorable and enjoyable journey to Lhasa.
