After breakfast, you will drive to the Ganden Monastery, about 70 kilometers east of Lhasa and is one of the “Great Three Gelugpa monasteries of Tibet”, founded by the Great Tsongkhapa in 1409. Later we will visit chapels of Genden monastery and the tomb of Tsongkhapa, the founder of Gelupa sect. After touring Ganden Monastery, we will head to visit Drak Yerpa Monastery.

About 1 hour’s scenic driving, you can see the distinctive vibes of Tibetan countryside: grazing yaks, nibbling sheep and barley fields and farming locals. All looks so harmonious and peaceful. Hiking up from parking lot, the view from the foot of the towering escarpment at Drak Yerpa will take your breath away. The history of these temples dates back to the middle of the 7th century, built by Songsten Gampo. Numbers of Buddhist masters meditated in these caves such as Yeshe Tsoygel, Padmasambhava and Asisha, which makes it a central place for meditation and pilgrimage. Walking along with a trail on the mountain connecting different rooms or caves. Some of the rooms are big, with Buddhist sculptures and historic treasures. Encounter local people using yak butter to stick money on the stone for Buddha and using their hands and knees to rub cave surface to make it very smooth. Later, drive back to Lhasa downtown.

Wonderful Tour in Tibet: Ganden Monastery and Drak Yerpa

Our 5-day Tibet tour was a journey of enlightenment and discovery. When we had the leisure trek up to Drak Yerpa, we immersed ourselves in the sacred atmosphere and meditated in the ancient caves. Our guide, Mr. Kalsang Rinchen, shared captivating stories about the history and significance of this holy site, deepening our connection to the land and its spiritual heritage. Exploring the monasteries in Tibet—Ganden, Drepung and Sera—was a profound experience. Each monastery had its own unique charm and history, and our guide provided fascinating insights into the Buddhism tradition. The grandeur of Ganden Monastery, the serenity of Drepung, and the vibrancy of Sera left a lasting impression on us. Of course, no visit to Lhasa would be complete without seeing the historic Potala Palace. As we marveled at its majestic architecture and intricate artwork, we couldn't help but feel the weight of its historical significance as the traditional home of the Dalai Lama. Throughout our journey, Tibet Horizon's professionalism and dedication to service were evident. From seamless logistics to personalized attention, they went above and beyond to ensure our comfort and satisfaction. Heartfelt thanks to the entire team for creating an experience that surpassed all expectations.

    Monks we in the monastery.

    Tibetan Buddhism Exploration Route

Hello! My grandparents are interested in Tibetan Buddhism. Is this trip suitable for them to explore Buddhist teachings?

Mr. Kalsang Younten from Tibet Horizon, answered on January 29th, 2024

Dear Laine, thank you for extending your question to us!

This trip is ideal for exploring Tibetan Buddhism as it includes Sera Monastery, Drepung Monastery and Ganden Monastery. The three are renowned as the Great Three Monasteries in Tibet and Ganden Monastery is the first monastery of Gelug School. Visiting these places, your grandparents can learn a lot about the development and teachings of Tibetan Buddhism and catch a glimpse of monks’ practice life.
