  • Mrs. Margaret from America, asked on December 18th, 2023

    Kids Traveling to EBC Possible?

Good evening. I'm planning a trip to EBC with my family. We have a kid of 8 and an elderly person of 67. I’m wondering if they may experience severe altitude sickness.

Mr. Kalsang Rinchen from Tibet Horizon, answered on December 18th, 2023

    Dear Margaret,

Thank you for reaching out with your inquiry about traveling to Tibet. We appreciate your interest and are happy to assist you.

In fact, altitude sickness has little to do with age, and is mainly related to personal hypoxia tolerance and how you acclimate to the high altitude. Traveling on the Tibet Plateau, it’s common for some tourists to experience altitude sickness. To minimize the effect of altitude sickness, it is important to allow time to acclimate to the high altitude and to take precautions to prevent altitude sickness. You should drink plenty of water, eat light meals, and avoid alcohol or caffeine. It is also recommended to take a slow path in the first two days after entering Tibet and ascend gradually to a higher altitude. We also strongly recommend doing physical examinations and consulting a doctor before taking a Tibet trip.

We have carefully planned our routes, giving you enough time to adapt to the plateau environment before heading to EBC. Our local guides will closely follow your family’s health condition and offer timely assistance throughout your stay in Tibet. We have successfully received many small kids and seniors traveling to Tibet. With thoughtful arrangements, we ensure a safe Tibet tour to Mt. Everest area. If you have further questions, don’t hesitate to contact us. We’re always here to help you figure out a safe and comfortable Tibet family tour!

  • Mrs Amanda from Ireland, asked on March 15th, 2024

Travel to Lhasa and Everest in July

Hi! I am planning to visit Lhasa and Everest in the middle of July, but I have heard that there will be a rainy season. How is the actual condition over there in July? Is it possible to view Mt. Everest?

Mr. Tenzin Sherab from Tibet Horizon, answered on March 15th, 2024

    Dear Amanda,

Thank you for reaching out to us!

It's true that July, August and September are the rainy season in Tibet. But that doesn't mean it will rain every day. In those months there will be more clouds than in other months, but that doesn't mean that there won't be blue skies. You can be lucky to enjoy the blue sky, sunlight and clear view of Mt. Everest, but you can also be unlucky and Mt. Everest will be in the clouds. If you want to have a bigger chance to see Mount Everest clearly with blue sky, you better visit before July or after mid September. The best time to join a Tibet tour to Lhasa and EBC is generally from April to June and from September to October. During these months, the weather is relatively stable, with clear skies, mild temperatures and less rainfall, making it ideal for traveling on the breathtaking landscapes of Tibet.

If you have further questions, please feel free to contact us.

  • Miss Emma from Australia, asked on April 4th, 2024

Question on Tibet Travel Documents Needed

Hi. I'm Emma, an overseas student in China. I've heard that traveling to Nyingchi needs to apply for other documents in addition to a Tibet Travel Permit. Is that true?

Mr. Tashi Wangyal from Tibet Horizon, answered on April 4th, 2023

    Dear Emma,

Thank you for reaching out to us!

It's true that traveling to Nyingchi need other travel documents. To visit Nyingchi, you typically need the following permits: Tibet Travel Permit, which is required for all foreign travelers visiting Tibet. Aliens' Travel Permit, which is required for foreign travelers visiting areas outside Lhasa. Military Area Entry Permit, which is needed if you want to tour some areas like Nyingchi.

Our Xizang (Tibet) tour packages include the Tibet Travel Permit and all the necessary Tibet travel documents. If you book with us, we’ll help apply for the permits needed to ensure a smooth and worry-free Nyingchi Peach Festival tour.

  • Mr. Ben from Germany, asked on November 27th, 2023

Chengdu to Nyingchi Lhasa Overland Route Available?

Hello, my wife and I want to go to Sichuan in early October and then travel to Nyingchi and Lhasa by road. Is that possible? We are both German with German passports. Any help will be highly appreciated. Best wishes from Ben in German.

Mr. Tenzin Jamphel from Tibet Horizon, answered on November 27th, 2023

Dear Ben, thank you for your inquiry! Your travel plan is absolutely possible. We have Chengdu to Tibet overland tour routes that are quite popular among travelers.

Following the scenic G318 Highway from Chengdu to Nyingchi typically takes 6 to 7 days. Along the drive, you can see stunning landscapes of Zheduo Mountain, Yalong River, Bangda Grassland, etc. Upon your arrival in Nyingchi, you can appreciate the natural views there and then continue your trip to Lhasa.

With your German Visa, you and your wife can travel to China with no need to apply for a Chinese Visa if your entire journey in China falls within 15 days. If your Tibet tour is over 15 days, you still need to apply for China Visa. Other necessary documents include Tibet Travel Permit and Military Area Entry Permit. If you book with us, we’ll arrange all the travel documents needed to ensure a smooth trip for you!

If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact us. We're here to make your Chengdu-Nyingchi-Lhasa journey enjoyable and worry-free!

  • Mr. Brown from Australia, asked on October 30th, 2023

    Which monasteries to visit

Hello, I am planning our Lhasa itinerary and it is hard to decide which monasteries to visit, and we will only have 3 days in Lhasa, any recommendations on which monasteries to visit, between, Deprung, Sera, Norbulingka and Jokhang Temple? I believe Ganden is a must!

Mr. Kalsang Younte from Tibet Horizon, answered on October 30th

Dear Brown, thank you for reaching out with your itinerary planning for Lhasa. With only three days in Lhasa, it will be challenging to visit all the significant monasteries, but it is certainly possible to see the highlights. Here's a suggested plan:

Day 1:Drepung Monastery: Begin your day at Drepung Monastery, once the largest monastery in the world. Its historical significance and serene surroundings make it a must-visit. Sera Monastery: In the afternoon, head to Sera Monastery. Time your visit to witness the famous debating monks in the courtyard, an unforgettable experience.

Day 2: Potala Palace: Start your visit with the iconic Potala Palace. It is not only a UNESCO World Heritage site but also a symbol of Tibetan Buddhism and architecture. Jokhang Temple: In the afternoon, visit Jokhang Temple, which is considered the spiritual heart of Lhasa. The temple is surrounded by the bustling Barkhor Street, perfect for experiencing local culture.

Day 3: Ganden Monastery: Dedicate your final day to Ganden Monastery. Although it is a bit farther from Lhasa, its breathtaking views and religious importance make it well worth the trip.

This itinerary ensures that you experience the rich history, culture, and spirituality of Lhasa within a limited timeframe. If you need further assistance or more detailed recommendations, feel free to contact us. We can also suggest the best routes and provide additional travel tips to enhance your visit.

Hi, we are planning a visit to Lhasa in late December and we are wondering whether going to Shigatse is a good idea in terms of the views, weather and the time it takes from Lhasa since we will only spend 6 days in Lhasa. We are also considering doing few one day trips from Lhasa, any must sees? thanks!

Mr. Passang Norbu from Tibet Horizon, answered on November 6th, 2021

Dear Russia, thank you for considering us for your trip to Lhasa in late December.

Regarding Shigatse, late December can bring cold weather and challenging road conditions due to snow. However, if you are prepared, Shigatse offers scenic winter views. The journey from Lhasa to Shigatse takes about 5-6 hours by road.

For one-day trips from Lhasa, consider these destinations: Namtso Lake: Stunning natural scenery and spiritual significance, about 5 hours from Lhasa. Yamdrok Lake: Turquoise waters and snow-capped mountains, closer and more accessible. Ganden Monastery: Historic monastery with beautiful mountain views, close to Lhasa. Tsedang: Historical sites like Yumbulagang Palace and Samye Monastery, a bit farther but doable in a day.

These spots offer great experiences within a day's journey from Lhasa. If you need more details or assistance, feel free to contact us. We can help tailor your itinerary for a memorable trip.

    The Shigatse-Gyantse portion worth doing?

Hi, can you tell me if the Shigatse-Gyantse portion worth doing? I can't decide between the 4D Lhasa only tour or the 6D Lhasa-Shigatse-Gyantse tour. Is Sh-Gy a rough trip and how is the sanitation situation?

Mr. Tseten Namgyal from Tibet Horizon, answered on March 8th, 2023

Dear Rossi, thank you for your inquiry regarding your travel plans in Tibet.

The Shigatse-Gyantse portion of the tour is indeed worth considering. This route offers some of the most breathtaking scenery and significant cultural sites in Tibet. Gyantse is home to the famous Pelkor Chode Monastery and the unique Gyantse Kumbum, while Shigatse features Tashilhunpo Monastery, the traditional seat of the Panchen Lama.

Questions on Local Transportation by Foreigners

Hi, there are several questions I am confused about transportation. Would you like provide more information with me. I wonder how extensive is the public transport in Lhasa City? And can foreigners use public transport to get to places in Lhasa City? If yes, Is it still necessary to hire a guide if we were to move around on our own?

Mr. Tenzin Jamphel from Tibet Horizon, answered on November 11st, 2023

Dear Chen, thank you for your inquiry about transportation in Lhasa City. We are pleased to provide you with detailed information.

Lhasa has a well-developed public transportation system that includes buses and taxis. The bus network covers most parts of the city, making it accessible for both locals and tourists. There are also dedicated routes that connect major tourist attractions within the city.

Foreigners can use public transport in Lhasa. Modern buses operate on more than 20 routes around the city. Although bus stops can be a little hard to find initially and information boards may only list major stops, buses run every 20 minutes on each route. The information is not in English, so some prior research with your guide is recommended. However, the buses are cheap, with most routes costing just 1-2 yuan. While you can use public transport to move around Lhasa, it is mandatory for foreigners to have a guide when traveling in Tibet, including Lhasa.

Should you have any more questions or need further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Whether the altitude will be a problem for the kids

Hi, we are planning a trip to Chengdu and were hoping to include Lhasa as part of our trip.We are travelling with some younger children ages 4 and 8.I was wondering whether the altitude will be a problem for the kids. We would envisage spending about three nights after visiting Chengdu.

Mr. Tsering Wangdue from Tibet Horizon, answered on August 23rd, 2022

Dear Mertens, thank you for reaching out us. Traveling to Lhasa, situated at an altitude of about 3,650 meters (12,000 feet), can pose challenges due to the high altitude, especially for young children. Altitude sickness can affect anyone, and young children may have difficulty expressing their discomfort. Watch for symptoms like headaches, nausea, dizziness, and shortness of breath.

To mitigate these risks, ensure your children stay well-hydrated, rest adequately, and avoid strenuous activities upon arrival. Gradually ascending to higher altitudes before reaching Lhasa, if possible, can also help their bodies adjust. We strongly recommend consulting with your pediatrician for personalized advice and preventive measures.

With careful planning and the right precautions, traveling to Lhasa with young children can be safe and enjoyable. If you have further questions or need assistance with your travel arrangements, please don't hesitate to contact us. We are here to help ensure you have a safe and memorable trip.

Some questions on different price between Chinese and foreigner

Hello, I study in Shanghai and I'd like to make a tour in Tibet. I know I need Tibet entry permit. I just wonder, why the trip to Tibet for Chinese is twice cheaper that foreigners. If you could help me and recommend good way how to get there and don't ruin my student budget I would be really appreciate.

Mr. Tseten Namgyal from Tibet Horizon, answered on July 11th, 2023

Dear Costa, thank you for reaching out us. The difference in pricing typically stems from several factors. Firstly, Chinese citizens can travel independently in Tibet, while foreign visitors are required to be accompanied by a private guide and vehicle, which significantly increases the cost. Additionally, the cost of transportation within Tibet, especially for long-distance drives, can be quite expensive due to the rugged terrain and remote locations.

To help you stay within your student budget, we recommend considering alternative transportation options such as taking a train to Lhasa from Shanghai, which is generally more budget-friendly compared to flying. You can also save money by booking your train ticket in advance.

Buy Diamox in Lhasa or bring it with me?

I learned online that Diamox can help alleviate altitude sickness. I would like to know if this medication is available for purchase at pharmacies in Lhasa, or if I should bring it with me?

Mr. Kalsang Rinchen from Tibet Horizon, answered on March 18th, 2023

Dear Garcia, thank you for your inquiry. Diamox is indeed known to help alleviate altitude sickness. However, it's essential to note that Diamox typically needs to be started one to two days before your trip.

While pharmacies in Lhasa may carry Diamox, it's not always readily available, and you may need to consult a doctor at a hospital to obtain it. Therefore, we recommend preparing Diamox before your departure and starting the medication as instructed. Any advice on the trip Lhasa to Kathmandu

Hi there I'm planning a trip arriving Lhasa and finishing in Kathmandu. Any advice on who to fly with for cheapest price? Are there any particular days they fly out?

Mr. Tenzin Sherab from Tibet Horizon, answered on February 15th, 2021

Dear González, thank you for reaching out us. To provide you with the most accurate information, could you please share your estimated travel dates with us? This will help us determine the best options for flights and provide you with more reliable

1.If you have around 8 days, you can drive from Lhasa to the Nepal border via Everest Base Camp (EBC). From there, you can take local jeeps to Kathmandu. Please note that currently, the road near the Nepal border is damaged by landslides, but if your trip is next year, this may not be a problem.

2.If you're short on time, you can fly from Lhasa to Kathmandu. While the direct flight by Air China is a bit expensive and not available daily, China Eastern Air sometimes offers excellent discount tickets. They fly from Lhasa to Kunming and then from Kunming to Kathmandu, sometimes at half the cost of the direct flight. However, the availability and pricing of connecting flights can vary depending on several factors.

Once we have your estimated travel dates, we can provide you with more specific flight options and recommendations. Please feel free to contact us if you have any further questions or need assistance with your travel arrangements.
