An Unforgettable Sojourn in Lhasa!

2025-06-19 written by Emily Davis Comments

Hey there! I'm back from an unforgettable four-day whirlwind trip in Lhasa, and I've got to say, this trip exceeded my expectations. Now, I know what you're thinking: “Just four days?” But in fact, those four days were packed with so many amazing experiences. From exploring ancient monasteries to immersing in the heart of Tibetan spirituality, every moment was a new adventure.

Day 1: Touching Down in Lhasa

The journey to Lhasa, the spiritual heart of Tibet, began with a flight that offered breathtaking views of the Himalayas—snow-capped mountains as far as the eye could see. As we touched down at Lhasa Gonggar Airport, the crisp air and the bright sun were the first signs welcoming us to the "Roof of the World."

We took it easy on the first day, just walking around and getting used to the altitude. We strolled around the city, with colorful prayer flags everywhere and the sound of chanting filling the air. It was a chill way to start the trip.

Day 2: Exploring Monasteries

On day two, we delved into Tibet’s rich monastic culture. Our guide, Mr. Karma, a local Tibetan with an encyclopedic knowledge of the region's history and traditions, led us to Drepung Monastery first. Drepung used to be the largest monastery in the world, and now it is a testament to the depth of Tibetan Buddhism. The walls are covered in amazing murals, echoed with the sound of prayer and debate among the monks.

In the afternoon, we visited Sera Monastery, known for the famous "Buddha Debates" held in its courtyard. It was fascinating to watch the monks engage in these animated discussions, a practice meant to sharpen their understanding of Buddhist philosophies. It was like nothing I've ever seen before. Although I didn’t understand the monks’ spoken language, I could feel their devotion and wisdom through their body language.

Day 3: The Majestic Potala Palace and Jokhang Temple

We spent the third day at two of the most famous spots in Lhasa: the Potala Palace and the Jokhang Temple. The Potala Palace is a symbol of Tibetan culture and religion. Its white and red buildings seemed to touch the sky, and the intricate artworks were a feast for the eyes.

In the afternoon, we made our way to the Jokhang Temple, one of the most sacred temples in Tibet. The temple houses a gold Jowo Sakyamuni statue that everyone comes to see, said to have been brought to Tibet by the Chinese Princess Wencheng. The temple was bustling with devotees prostrating, and you can see the look of devotion on their faces. It was pretty powerful.

Then, we had a relaxing walk around Jokhang Temple at Barkhor Street, the oldest street in Lhasa. The narrow cobblestone streets were lined with shops selling traditional Tibetan goods, from handcrafted jewelry to Thangka paintings. The aroma of butter tea filled the air, tempting us to try the local specialties. We also got to see how the locals live their daily lives, their faces lit with smiles and a sense of contentment. It reminds us of the simple joys of life and the importance of living in the present.

Day 4: Farewell to Lhasa

As our four-day journey came to an end, we were left with a whole new perspective on Lhasa and a deeper understanding of Tibetan culture. Lhasa, with its rich history, splendid monasteries and palaces, as well as warm-hearted people, had left an unforgettable impression on all of us. If time permits, I’ll definitely stay longer to appreciate more about Tibet’s natural and cultural wonders!

If you're considering a trip to Lhasa, I'd say go for it. It's not just a vacation; it's a journey that'll stick with you long after you've left. Safe travels, and may your journeys be as unforgettable as mine.
