  • 1. How to get to Everest Base Camp?

Travelers can get to Tibet Everest Base Camp from Tibet or Nepal.

To reach the Everest Base Camp from the Tibet side, travelers can either take a flight or a train to Lhasa, the capital of Tibet, and then travel by road to the base camp. From Lhasa, it takes around 8-10 hours directly to Tibet EBC. Most tourists travel from Lhasa to Shigatse to Everest Base Camp for 4 days to enjoy the view along the way. An alternative is to take a bullet train from Lhasa to Shigatse, which only takes 2h20min, and then drive about 350km to EBC.

If traveling from Nepal, you will cross the Gyirong Border and then travel about 340km by road to Everest Base Camp.

  • 2. What is the best time to visit Everest Base Camp?

The best time to visit Tibet is generally from April to June and from September to October. During these months, the weather is relatively stable, with clear skies and mild temperatures, making it ideal for enjoying the stunning views of Mount Everest and the surrounding Himalayan landscape.

  • 3. What permits are needed to visit Everest Base Camp in Tibet?

To visit Everest Base Camp in Tibet, travelers typically need the following permits:

Tibet Travel Permit: This permit is issued by the Tibet Tourism Bureau (TTB) and is required for all foreign travelers visiting Tibet.

Aliens' Travel Permit: Travelers traveling to partially restricted areas such as EBC, Basumtso Lake, Samye Monastery, etc. need to obtain Aliens’ Travel Permit via Tibet Travel Agency (like Tibet Horizon).

Military Area Entry Permit: If you're extending your trip to military-sensitive areas such as Mount Kailash, Lake Manasarovar, etc, need to apply for a Military Area Entry Permit.

Chinese Group Visa: If you travel to Tibet from Nepal, you’ll need a Chinese Group Visa issued by the Embassy in Kathmandu.

  • 4. Where to stay at Everest Base Camp?

Currently, there are two options for accommodation at EBC. During the peak tourist season from April to October, tourists can stay in the tent camps. These camps provide basic facilities, such as food, beds, pillows and sheets. There’s no private bathroom in the camp. Staying in the tent guest house offers a unique opportunity to appreciate the snow-capped and mighty Mount Everest at close range. However, due to the cold weather and climate, the tents are not available during winter. In winter, Rongbuk Monastery Guesthouse is the only place to stay at Mount Everest in winter. • Mr.Garcia from America, asked on March 18th, 2023

Buy Diamox in Lhasa or bring it with me?

I learned online that Diamox can help alleviate altitude sickness. I would like to know if this medication is available for purchase at pharmacies in Lhasa, or if I should bring it with me?

Mr. Kalsang Rinchen from Tibet Horizon, answered on March 18th, 2023

Dear Garcia, thank you for your inquiry. Diamox is indeed known to help alleviate altitude sickness. However, it's essential to note that Diamox typically needs to be started one to two days before your trip.

While pharmacies in Lhasa may carry Diamox, it's not always readily available, and you may need to consult a doctor at a hospital to obtain it. Therefore, we recommend preparing Diamox before your departure and starting the medication as instructed. It's crucial to be aware that Diamox can have side effects, so it's essential to consult with a doctor before taking it. We advise against purchasing Diamox without proper medical guidance.

  • Miss Gonzalez from Spain, asked on February 15th, 2021

Any advice on the trip Lhasa to Kathmandu

Hi there I'm planning a trip arriving Lhasa and finishing in Kathmandu. Any advice on who to fly with for cheapest price? Are there any particular days they fly out?

Mr. Tenzin Sherab from Tibet Horizon, answered on February 15th, 2021

Dear González, thank you for reaching out us. To provide you with the most accurate information, could you please share your estimated travel dates with us? This will help us determine the best options for flights and provide you with more reliable

1.If you have around 8 days, you can drive from Lhasa to the Nepal border via Everest Base Camp (EBC). From there, you can take local jeeps to Kathmandu. Please note that currently, the road near the Nepal border is damaged by landslides, but if your trip is next year, this may not be a problem.

2.If you're short on time, you can fly from Lhasa to Kathmandu. While the direct flight by Air China is a bit expensive and not available daily, China Eastern Air sometimes offers excellent discount tickets. They fly from Lhasa to Kunming and then from Kunming to Kathmandu, sometimes at half the cost of the direct flight. However, the availability and pricing of connecting flights can vary depending on several factors.

Once we have your estimated travel dates, we can provide you with more specific flight options and recommendations. Please feel free to contact us if you have any further questions or need assistance with your travel arrangements.

  • Mr. Costa from Brazil, asked on July 11th, 2023

Some questions on different price between Chinese and foreigner

Hello, I study in Shanghai and I'd like to make a tour in Tibet. I know I need Tibet entry permit. I just wonder, why the trip to Tibet for Chinese is twice cheaper that foreigners. If you could help me and recommend good way how to get there and don't ruin my student budget I would be really appreciate.

Mr. Tseten Namgyal from Tibet Horizon, answered on July 11th, 2023

Dear Costa, thank you for reaching out us. The difference in pricing typically stems from several factors. Firstly, Chinese citizens can travel independently in Tibet, while foreign visitors are required to be accompanied by a private guide and vehicle, which significantly increases the cost. Additionally, the cost of transportation within Tibet, especially for long-distance drives, can be quite expensive due to the rugged terrain and remote locations.

To help you stay within your student budget, we recommend considering alternative transportation options such as taking a train to Lhasa from Shanghai, which is generally more budget-friendly compared to flying. You can also save money by booking your train ticket in advance.

If you have any further questions or need assistance, please don't hesitate to contact us. We're here to help make your trip to Tibet enjoyable and affordable!

My wife, a Chinese national, will join me. I understand I need permits, but I'm unsure about the group travel requirement. I prefer to explore at my own pace with my wife, not as part of a group. Any advice would be much appreciated!

Questions on Local Transportation by Foreigners

Hi, there are several questions I am confused about transportation. Would you like provide more information with me. I wonder how extensive is the public transport in Lhasa City? And can foreigners use public transport to get to places in Lhasa City? If yes, Is it still necessary to hire a guide if we were to move around on our own?

Mr. Tenzin Jamphel from Tibet Horizon, answered on November 11st, 2023

Dear Chen, thank you for your inquiry about transportation in Lhasa City. We are pleased to provide you with detailed information.

Lhasa has a well-developed public transportation system that includes buses and taxis. The bus network covers most parts of the city, making it accessible for both locals and tourists. There are also dedicated routes that connect major tourist attractions within the city.

Foreigners can use public transport in Lhasa. Modern buses operate on more than 20 routes around the city. Although bus stops can be a little hard to find initially and information boards may only list major stops, buses run every 20 minutes on each route. The information is not in English, so some prior research with your guide is recommended. However, the buses are cheap, with most routes costing just 1-2 yuan. While you can use public transport to move around Lhasa, it is mandatory for foreigners to have a guide when traveling in Tibet, including Lhasa.

Should you have any more questions or need further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us.

  • Mr. Mertens from Belgium, asked on August 23rd, 2022

Whether the altitude will be a problem for the kids

Hi, we are planning a trip to Chengdu and were hoping to include Lhasa as part of our trip.We are travelling with some younger children ages 4 and 8.I was wondering whether the altitude will be a problem for the kids. We would envisage spending about three nights after visiting Chengdu.

Mr. Tsering Wangdue from Tibet Horizon, answered on August 23rd, 2022

Dear Mertens, thank you for reaching out us. Traveling to Lhasa, situated at an altitude of about 3,650 meters (12,000 feet), can pose challenges due to the high altitude, especially for young children. Altitude sickness can affect anyone, and young children may have difficulty expressing their discomfort. Watch for symptoms like headaches, nausea, dizziness, and shortness of breath.

To mitigate these risks, ensure your children stay well-hydrated, rest adequately, and avoid strenuous activities upon arrival. Gradually ascending to higher altitudes before reaching Lhasa, if possible, can also help their bodies adjust. We strongly recommend consulting with your pediatrician for personalized advice and preventive measures.

With careful planning and the right precautions, traveling to Lhasa with young children can be safe and enjoyable. If you have further questions or need assistance with your travel arrangements, please don't hesitate to contact us. We are here to help ensure you have a safe and memorable trip.

  • Mr. Richard from France, asked on March 12th, 2024

Chinese Group Visa No Need for French?

Hi! I’m from France with French passport. If I fly to Lhasa from Kathmandu and then travel back to Kathmandu with 15 days, I don’t need a Group Visa. It that true?

Mr. Tashi Wangyal from Tibet Horizon, answered on March 12th, 2024

Dear Richard, thank you for extending your question to us.

It’s true that people from countries enjoying 15-day visa-exemption policy, including France, can travel from Kathmandu to Tibet without applying for the Chinese Group Visa. Although tourists from above-mentioned countries are exempted from a Chinese Group Visa, they still need some travel permits required for a Tibet tour. First, travelers need to apply for the Tibet Travel Permit, which is the prerequisite for entering into Tibet. To visit places such as EBC, you’ll need the Alien’s Travel Permit. If you travel to Ngari Prefecture, the Military Area Entry Permit is required.

Our agency can arrange all the necessary travel documents for you. If you have further questions, feel free to contact us.

Hi, I want to travel to Tibet next year during Chinese summer or winter vacation. If I go to Tibet in winter, can I visit Namtso Lake?

Mr. Tenzin Sherab from Tibet Horizon, answered on July 15th, 2024

Dear Park, thank you for extending your question to us.

It’s not recommended to travel to Namtso Lake in winter. Situated at an altitude of 4,718 meters and surrounded by snow-capped mountains, Namtso Lake sees a special climate, which features strong wind and heavy snow in winter. November to February is the coldest time at Namtso and the lake begins to get frozen. During this period, the lake is often closed. Therefore, if you want to include Namtso Lake in your Tibet trip, you’d better avoid travel there in winter.

If your have further questions, feel free to contact us. We’re looking forward to your arrival in Tibet next year.

    Kathmandu, Lhasa, Beijing Travel Route

We plan to fly to Kathmandu in Aug for a short tour of Nepal. After that we want to visit Lhasa and Beijing. Which is a better route to take - is it better to take Kathmandu - Lhasa -Beijing -Kathmandu OR Kathmandu - Beijing - Lhasa -Kathmandu?

Mr. Tashi Wangyal from Tibet Horizon, answered on March 18th, 2024

Dear Dumont, thank you for reaching out with your travel plans. We're excited to help you with your itinerary.

Based on your plan to visit Kathmandu, Lhasa, and Beijing, it would be more efficient to follow the route Kathmandu - Lhasa - Beijing - Kathmandu. This route prevents backtracking and makes the most of your travel time. Additionally, it simplifies your visa process. Traveling from Nepal to Tibet requires a special type of Chinese visa, which you must obtain in Kathmandu. This visa will replace any other Chinese visa in your passport, so it's best not to apply for a regular Chinese visa beforehand.

If your travel dates are flexible, you might consider spending several days in Tibet beyond Lhasa, as it's a unique opportunity to explore this remarkable region. Depending on your schedule and budget, you can either take a train from Lhasa to Xining and then fly to Beijing or fly directly from Lhasa to Beijing. We recommend allowing at least four full days to explore Beijing before your onward journey.

Should you have any further questions or need assistance, please don't hesitate to contact us. We're here to ensure you have a wonderful and smooth trip.

Chance of Seeing Kailash and Manasarovar in August

Hi, I am planning to visit Kailash Mansarovar in early August. How is the typical visibility of Mount Kailash during this time of the year? I want to know if my chances of seeing Mt. Kailash from Mansarovar Lake at this time of the year is good or not.

Mr. Tsering Wangdue from Tibet Horizon, answered on June 7th, 2024

Dear Neri, thank you for your inquiry regarding your upcoming trip. We appreciate your interest and are delighted to assist you.

In early August, the visibility of Mount Kailash from Mansarovar Lake can be quite variable. This period falls within the monsoon season in the region, which typically spans from late June to early September. During the monsoon season, the area often experiences heavy rainfall, cloud cover, and fog. Consequently, these weather conditions can significantly impact the visibility of Mount Kailash.

While clear days are possible, there is a significant chance of overcast skies and rain, which may obscure the view. It's important to be prepared for changing weather conditions and to have some flexibility in your schedule to maximize your chances of witnessing the mountain's beauty.

Age Limit for Kailash Manasarovar Yatra

I wonder if there is a formal age limit for Kailash Manasarovar Yatra for Indian pilgrims. One of the members in our group is 74 years.
    I have two related questions:
    1. Is there an age limit for issuing the chinese visa for Manasarovar- Kailash Yatra
    2. Is there a separate age limit imposed by chinese officials or tour organisers for the Kailash Parikrama alone.
    Thank you for your help.

Mr. Tenzin Jamphel from Tibet Horizon, answered on December 21st, 2023

Dear Verma, thank you for reaching out with your inquiry regarding the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra.

Typically, there isn't a formal age limit for issuing a Chinese visa for the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra. However, visa approval is contingent upon meeting certain health and safety requirements, given the challenging nature of the journey. It's advisable for elderly pilgrims to undergo thorough medical examinations and obtain a fitness certificate from a qualified doctor.

For the Kailash Parikrama, Chinese officials and tour organizers often impose age and health restrictions due to the high altitude and physical demands of the trek. Generally, those over the age of 70 may be subject to additional scrutiny and might be advised against participating in the Parikrama, depending on their health status. It's crucial for anyone attempting the Parikrama to be in excellent health, regardless of age.

If you have any further questions or need more information, please feel free to contact us. We're here to help and ensure you have a safe and memorable journey.

Cultural Experience During Saga Dawa Trip

Hello, I haven't seen specific arrangements regarding the Saga Dawa Festival in the itinerary. I'd like to know if there are any specific cultural experiences or visits to local festive events included in the tour?

Mr. Tseten Namgyal from Tibet Horizon, answered on January 21st, 2024

Dear Berg, thank you for reaching out with your question.

Regarding the Saga Dawa Festival in 2024, it takes place in May 16, 2024 and will last for a month, coinciding with the full moon. During this festival, various religious activities, such as circumambulating sacred sites, prayer rituals, and cultural performances, are held to commemorate the birth, enlightenment, and death of Buddha.

If your trip falls during the Saga Dawa Festival, we can certainly arrange for you to participate in the festivities. Our tour guides are knowledgeable about local events and can help facilitate your involvement in the celebrations.

However, if your visit does not align with the Saga Dawa Festival, there are still plenty of other popular festivals in Tibet that you can experience. For example, Losar (Tibetan New Year), Shoton Festival (Yogurt Festival), and Tibetan Horse Racing Festival are among the most significant ones. These festivals often feature vibrant ceremonies, traditional dances, horse racing, and other cultural performances.

    Tibet Trek Preparations

Hi there, I'm wondering if there's any special gear or equipment I need to bring for trekking to Mount Everest and Mount Kailash. It's going to be my first trekking trip in Tibet, and I've heard that many people experience altitude sickness there, so I want to be extra prepared for any unexpected situations.

Mr. Tsering Wangdue from Tibet Horizon, answered on December 25th, 2023

Dear Claus, thank you for reaching out with your question.

When it comes to equipment for trekking, it's generally recommended to bring along appropriate gear such as sturdy hiking boots, waterproof clothing, layers for changing weather conditions, a good quality backpack, trekking poles for stability, and a first aid kit. While some basic equipment may be available for rent in Lhasa or provided by the travel agency, it's often more convenient and reliable to bring your own gear. However, if you have specific preferences or limitations, feel free to let us know, and we can assist you accordingly.

As for dealing with altitude sickness during the trek, it's essential to acclimatize properly by taking your time to ascend gradually and staying well-hydrated. If you start experiencing symptoms such as headaches, nausea, or dizziness, it's essential to rest, hydrate, and avoid strenuous activity. In severe cases, descending to lower altitudes may be necessary. Our guides are trained to recognize and assist with altitude sickness, so don't hesitate to communicate any concerns or symptoms you may have during the trek.

If you have any further questions or need assistance, please don't hesitate to contact us. We're here to ensure you have a safe and enjoyable trekking experience.
