Due to Ngari prefecture located in the remote border, international travelers need apply for the following necessary permits to visit Mt. Kailash and other attractions in Ngari prefecture:

1. Tibet Travel Permit

Tibet Travel Permit is an entry permit to Tibet and it also known as Tibet Visa. It is the most important permit for Tibet tour. You will use it to board your flight or train to Lhasa and then use is in your whole Tibet tour itinerary.

In order to obtain Tibet Travel Permit, you need book a Tibet tour with us and then we as the local authorized tour operator go to help you apply for it from Tibet Tourism Bureau. You need to give us the scanned copies of your passport and China visa at least 15 days in advance.

2. Aliens’ Travel Permit

Aliens’ Travel Permit is the must paper to visit the special site, the non-open area or border area in Tibet. During your Kailash tour, your tour guide will help you apply for it in the local Public Security Bureau of Shigatse. It normally takes around 1-2 hours.

3. Military Permit, Foreign Affairs Permit and Frontier Permit

Military Permit is a permit for visiting “sensitive” areas of Tibet under military control. The Foreign Affairs Permit and Frontier Permit are filed in Foreign Affairs Department. They are together. Before you start Tibet trip, we need to help you apply for them well from Foreign Affairs Department in Lhasa. It often takes 15-30 days.

Special Tibet Permits for Indian Pilgrims to Mount Kailash Mansarovar Yatra

In Buddhist and Hindu cosmology, Mount Kailash is the earthly manifestation of Mount Semeru, which is the spiritual center of the universe. Thousands of Indian pilgrims travel to Mount Kailash and Mansarovar for a spiritual journey every year. The Tibet Permits to Ngari Prefecture for Indian pilgrims is different from international travelers.

The Foreign Affairs Office of TAR, Tibet Military Region, Armed Police Tibet Frontier Corps and the Department of Public Security of TAR work together to verify and issue Tibet Permits for Indian pilgrims. In fact, only two organizations can operate the Indian pilgrimage tour. One is the Foreign Affairs Office of Tibet Autonomous Region (governmental). The other is the China-India Pilgrim Reception Center (non-governmental), also called Pilgrim Center for short. Other organizations and travel companies are not allowed to receive pilgrims.

Frontier Pass for Chinese to Visit Mt Kailash and Mansarovar

If you are holding China’s ID Card or Home Return Permit (Chinese: 回乡证), you will do not need any Tibet Permit to visit Mt. Kailash and Mansarovar Lake. But you will need apply for Frontier Pass. After you book Tibet Ngari tour with us, we will help you apply for it from PSD in Lhasa. It takes one days to process.

Tibet Permits for Climbing Mount Kailash

Mount Kailash is considered to be sacred in four religions: Hinduism, Bon, Buddhism, and Jainism. Although it is only 6,638 meters above sea level, there is no any one climber to climb Kailash Mountain. Travelers can not apply for the climbing permit.
