My 8-Day Adventure in Lhasa and Everest

2024-12-02 written by Madison Spence Comments

Traveling has always been my passion, and this time, I set my sights on the mysterious and beautiful Tibet. I joined an 8-day tour to Lhasa and Everest, and it turned out to be an experience that will stay with me forever.

Day 1: Arrival in Lhasa

The journey began as I landed at Lhasa Gonggar Airport. Surrounded by majestic mountains, I could feel the unique charm of this high-altitude city immediately. The air was crisp and thin, but the excitement in my heart overpowered any discomfort. After being greeted by our friendly guide, Mr. Kalsang, we were transferred to the hotel. It was important to acclimatize to the altitude, so I took it easy for the rest of the day, sipping on some traditional Tibetan butter tea and admiring the views of the city from my window.

Day 2-3: Lhasa Exploration

We started our city tour with a visit to the Drepung Monastery. From the distance, it looks like a giant village sitting pretty on a mountainside, with buildings spreading out like a cozy neighborhood. We also visited the Sera Monastery, where the lively debates among the monks were a unique sight to behold. Their profound knowledge and dedication to Buddhism were truly inspiring.

The next day, we visited the famous Potala Palace. Standing tall on the hilltop, it looked like a majestic fortress from a fairytale. The intricate architecture and rich history within its walls left me in awe. As I walked through the various halls and chambers, I could almost hear the whispers of the past.

Then we explored Barkhor Street, where the bustling market was filled with colorful handicrafts, traditional Tibetan clothing, and the fragrant smell of incense. I interacted with the friendly locals, tried on some beautiful accessories, and even learned a few words in Tibetan, such as “Tashi Delek”, which means “Good luck and happiness to you.”

What impressed me most was the pilgrims heading toward Jokhang Temple on Barkhor Street. Some were spinning prayer wheels, chanting scriptures with determined gazes as they walked towards the sacred temple, while others performed kotow prayers, prostrating themselves towards the holy land in their hearts. Driven by their simple wishes, they were making their way in the slowest but devoutest manner. Their unwavering faith deeply touched me; they were covered in dust yet somehow remained spotless. If you were to witness this scene, you couldn't help but feel a profound sense of respect.

Day 4: Lhasa to Shigatse via Scenic Spots

Leaving Lhasa, we embarked on a journey filled with stunning landscapes. Our first stop was the Yamdrok Lake. The moment it came into view, I was breathless. The crystal-clear water shimmered in the sunlight, reflecting the surrounding snow-capped mountains like a mirror. Our guide said the color of the lake varies in different seasons. We took a leisurely walk along the lakeside, enjoying the harmony and taking countless photos.

Continuing our drive, we arrived at Karola Glacier, the closest glacier to the road in all of Tibet. Our guide told us that many classic Chinese movies have been filmed here. Sadly, because of the greenhouse effect, the snow line of Karola Glacier moves up a lot every year. So, hurry up and start a journey before it’s too late.

Day 5: Shigatse to Everest Base Camp

The most exciting day had arrived--we were heading to Everest Base Camp! The drive was long but filled with anticipation. When passing by Gawu La Pass, a vantage point that offers an unparalleled view of the Himalayan panorama, we couldn't resist pulling over to capture the moment with our cameras. As we got closer to the mountains, the scenery became more and more magnificent.

Finally, we reached the base camp at an altitude of 5200 meters. Standing there, looking up at the mighty Mount Everest, I felt a strong sense of accomplishment in the face of nature's grandeur. The snow-covered peak towered into the sky, and the thin air made every breath a reminder of the harsh yet beautiful environment.

After experiencing the captivating sunset over Mount Everest, we savored delightful lemon ginger tea and yak meat inside a guestroom near Rongbuk Monastery, the highest monastery in the world. With a diverse group of other international tourists gathering together, the atmosphere was lively and cheerful.

At night, despite the cold, I couldn't help but step outside to gaze at the starry sky. The Milky Way seemed so close as if I could reach out and touch it. It was a night I will never forget.

Day 6: Return to Shigatse

After a memorable sunrise at Everest Base Camp, we started our journey back to Shigatse.

The drive back was equally scenic, with the mountains on one side and the vast Tibetan plateau on the other. Along the way, we stopped at some viewpoints to take in the panoramic views and relive the memories of our time at the base camp. When we arrived in Shigatse, we visited the Tashilunpo Monastery. The monastery's grandeur and the spiritual energy within its walls were a fitting end to the day.

Day 7: Shigatse to Lhasa

Today was mostly a day of travel as we made our way back to Lhasa. The journey gave me time to reflect on the past few days and all the amazing experiences I had. The changing landscapes outside the window were like a movie playing in my mind, from the snow-capped mountains to the vast grasslands. We also passed by some small Tibetan villages, where I caught glimpses of the simple and traditional way of life.

Day 8: Farewell to Lhasa

The final day was bittersweet, as it marked the end of my journey. With our tour guide Mr. Kalsang, I had a free morning to buy some souvenirs back home and soak in the atmosphere of Lhasa. Then, it was time to say goodbye to this beautiful city. As I boarded the plane, I looked out the window one last time, knowing that I was leaving a part of my heart in Tibet.

During this 8-day tour, I witnessed the natural beauty of the Himalayas, immersed myself in the rich Tibetan culture, and made memories that I will cherish forever. I hope my story can inspire you to embark on this amazing adventure and discover the magic of Lhasa and Everest on your own. Thank you, Tibet Tourism, for planning such an enchanting itinerary and making my Tibet dream come true.
