Go to the Center of the World--Mount Kailash

2024-12-03 written by Luca Bianchi Comments

My friend and I, with our graduation caps tossed and degrees in hand, decided to have an after-graduation trip to celebrate the end of a phrase and the beginning of our next chapter. We yearned for something extraordinary, a journey that would fill our hearts with lasting memories. That's when we discovered the 13-day Lhasa, Everest, Kailash, and Kathmandu overland tour--an exploration through Tibet's mystic landscapes and Nepal's vibrant culture.

Lhasa Tour

We started our journey in Lhasa, the heart of Tibet. The moment we arrived at the Lhasa Gonggar International Airport, we were greeted by our friendly tour guide, Mr. Karma, who was holding a sign with our names. Our small group, a blend of diverse nationalities, was united by a common sense of curiosity. The first day was all about getting used to the altitude. We took it easy, just like the tips suggested, and hydrated ourselves well.

The next two days were dedicated to exploring Lhasa. We visited the magnificent Drepung Monastery and Sera Monastery. The ancient architecture and the peaceful vibes inside were truly captivating. And of course, we couldn't miss the Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple, and the bustling Barkhor Street. We strolled around, taking in the unique culture and snapping lots of pictures.

On our way to Kailash, Mount Everest awaits us

Then came the drive to Gyantse and Shigatse, each city offering a unique glimpse into Tibet's rich heritage. But it was the drive to Lake Yamdrok that truly captured my heart. The lake, a shimmering turquoise gem, was framed by snow-capped peaks, its waters so clear that they mirrored the sky above. It was a moment of pure tranquility, a stark contrast to the bustling cities we had left behind.

The trip to Everest Base Camp was one of the highlights for us. The first sight of Mount Everest, the world's highest peak, was nothing short of breathtaking. We reached an altitude of 5200 m and stayed overnight at the base camp.

As the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky with hues of orange and pink, I found myself in a state of awe, standing at the Everest Base Camp.

The next day, after appreciating the sunrise of Mt. Everest and seeing the sunlight casting its golden glow on the towering peak, we continued our journey to Saga.

Passing by Shishapangma, I was struck by its breathtaking beauty. Its name, translating to "a beautiful fairy maiden" in Tibetan according to our guide, seems to capture the mountain's allure perfectly. It was an honor to witness its splendor, even from a distance, and I carried the memory of its silent majesty with me as I moved forward on my path to the sacred Mount Kailash.

On our way to Darchen for the Mount Kailash trek, I was captivated by the serene beauty of Lake Manasarovar. Its crystal-clear, turquoise waters were a breathtaking sight, reflecting the surrounding snow-capped mountains with a calm that was both soothing and awe-inspiring.

Mount Kailash Kora, a pilgrimage of a lifetime

Another highlight of the trip was the 3-day trek around the sacred Mount Kailash. Joining pilgrims from across the region, we embarked on the Kora, a spiritual journey that took us through rugged landscapes.

On the first day of the trek, I was filled with a mixture of excitement and nervousness. The path started relatively gently, but as we progressed, the altitude began to take its toll. Every step seemed to require more effort than usual. However, the surrounding scenery was nothing short of spectacular. The snow-capped peaks in the distance, the vast expanse of the Tibetan Plateau, and the clear blue sky above created a backdrop that was both awe-inspiring and humbling. I met fellow trekkers from different parts of the world, each with their own story and motivation for undertaking this pilgrimage. We encouraged each other along the way, sharing water and snacks.

The second day was by far the most challenging. The terrain became steeper, and the altitude made breathing a constant struggle. But the sight of Mount Kailash itself kept me going. At times, I had to stop and rest frequently, but the determination within me was stronger. The views during this part of the trek were otherworldly. I saw glaciers glistening in the sunlight and ancient rock formations that seemed to hold the secrets of centuries. There were moments when I felt completely alone with nature, and it was both terrifying and liberating.

As I entered the third day of the trek, I was physically exhausted but spiritually rejuvenated. The final stretch was a test of my endurance, but with every step, I knew I was nearing the end of this remarkable journey. Completing the circuit around Mount Kailash was an indescribable feeling. It was as if I had achieved something far greater than just a physical feat.

Trekking around Kailash has opened my eyes to the power of nature and the importance of faith. I would recommend this pilgrimage to anyone who is seeking a deeper understanding of themselves and the world around them.

Goodbye Kailash, Hello Kathmandu

Crossing the border into Nepal at Gyirong was a transition into a different world. The drive to Kathmandu was a visual feast, with terraced fields and quaint villages dotting the landscape. Kathmandu, with its chaotic charm and rich cultural tapestry, was a fitting end to our journey. The city's ancient temples and bustling markets were a stark contrast to the serene landscapes of Tibet, yet equally enchanting.

This trip was truly an odyssey that surpassed our expectations. The professional tour guide made every stop meaningful with his knowledge and warmth. The accommodations were cozy, and the Tibetan cuisine was delicious. Thanks to Tibet Horizon, we didn't miss out on this unforgettable journey. We wholeheartedly recommend this tour to anyone who wants to explore the beauty and spirituality of Tibet. It's a trip that will stay with you for a lifetime.
