Namtso is a must-see attraction when you are traveling in Tibet. With an altitude of 4,718 meters above sea level, Namtso attracts lots of tourists from all over the world to visit. And it is believed that not a single tourist will be disappointed after they pay a visit to this sacred lake in Tibet because it is such a beautiful lake that they barely get a chance to see in other places. The name of Namtso in Tibet means “sky lake”. Famous for the pure and turquoise waters, the expansive blue sky, the neighboring snow-capped mountains, as well as the wild grassland, Namtso should always be on your Tibet tour plans.

Located in the center part of Tibet Autonomous Region. It covers about 200 kilometers from Lhasa to Namtso by driving a car via G9 or National Highway 109. It approximately looks like a rectangular in shape with a length of more than 70 kilometers from east to west and a width of more than 30 kilometers from north to south. With an area of about 1,920 square kilometers, Namtso is the second largest lake in Tibet and the third largest saltwater lake in China. Nyainqentanglha Mountain covered with snow all year round is on the south of Namtso. And on the north and west side of Namtso, there are plateau hills and vast lake shore. Namtso is like a huge mirror inlaid in the grassland in north Tibet.

Lhasa to Namtso Map

The distance between Lhasa and Namtso is about 200 kilometers, which takes about 3 hours on the road via G9 or 4 hours via National Highway 109. Tourists need to be prepared for the high altitude and the poor road condition when they are transferring to Namtso. But they will feel rewarded once they finally get to have a look at this breathtaking lake. The best time for tourists to pay a visit to Namtso is from May to October. Because of the heavy snow in winter, tourists will be forbidden to reach it until the next spring. Tourists can stay at the hotels in Damxung or in Namtso township. Or they can only stay in the tents within the scenic area. They can prepare tents for themselves, or they can rent one from the locals. It is important to keep warm in the middle night because the temperature can be very low. Most tourists will choose to put up with the poor conditions because of the galaxies and the starry sky at night and the stunning sunrise in the morning.
