Nagqu is a prefecture-level city in the north of the Tibet Autonomous Region. The name of Nagqu means “black river” in Tibetan language. It is known as “the place closest to the sky” because of its high altitude. Within this area, tourists will be impressed by the vast Qiangtang Grassland and the mysterious unpopulated area in north Tibet where inhabits many first-class protected animals in China, such ass wild yaks, Tibetan antelope, wild donkeys, etc. Every August or the sixth month in Tibetan calendar, Kyagqen Horse Race will be held in Nagqu, which will draw lots of tourists to Nagqu. Nagqu is located in the north Tibet Autonomous Region and the hinterland of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. It borders Qinghai Province in the north and Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region in the northwest. In Tibet, Nagqu is adjacent to Chamdo City in the east, Lhasa, Shigatse, and Nyingchi City in the south, and Ngari in the west. The whole area of Nagqu lies between Tanggula Mountains, the Nyainqentanglha Mountains, and the Gangdise Mountains in the north Tibet, which grants Nagqu an average altitude of more than 4,450 meters above sea level.

Nagqu administrates one district and ten counties, namely Seni District, Lhari County, Biru County, Nyainrong County, Amdo County, Xainza County, Sog County, Baingoin County, Baqên County, Nyima County, and Shuanghu County. Its administrative headquarters is located at No.3, Zhejiang West Road in the main town.

The most lively time of Nagqu is the August every year when the annual horse racing festival is held here. Local Herders, vendors, and tourists from home and abroad will come to join this great festival. They can not only see those rough knights riding on the horses, but also take part in kinds of folk activities of songs and dances. Besides, natural scenic spots in Nagqu include some amazing snow-capped mountains with an altitude of more than 6,500 meters and some important rivers. Qiangtang Grassland is the largest natural grassland in Tibet with an average altitude of more than 4,500 meters above sea level. Here tourists can have a look at some diverse Gobi, grasslands, lakes, mountains, and rivers.

Nagqu Train Station is the important stop along Qinghai-Tibet Railway. Almost all trains from major cities in China, including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Chongqing, Lanzhou, and Xining will make a stop at Nagqu Train Station. It is easy for tourists to visit this beautiful and mysterious land.
As for the road, Qinghai-Tibet Highway will take tourists to Nagqu. From Lhasa to Nagqu, it covers 340 kilometers in total and will take 5 hours to finish the overland tour. Along the road, tourists can have a look at the picturesque Namtso. But the road from Qinghai to Nagqu covers 1580 kilometers, which will take 24 hours. Tourists will pass through Golmud, Tuotuo River, Tanggula Mountain Pass, Amdo and finally arrive at Nagqu.
