ContentOn January 7, 2025, Tingri County in Tibet was struck by a strong earthquake of magnitude 6.8, prompting the suspension of the Mount Everest Scenic Area’s opening to the public from 10:00 AM on the same day.
With ociety’s full support, Tingri County has united its leaders and people from all ethnic groups to rise to the challenge and overcome difficulties. The earthquake relief efforts have smoothly transitioned from temporary resettlement to the post-disaster reconstruction stage, marking an important milestone in recovery.
After a thorough inspection and repairs, all facilities and the environment in the Mount Everest Scenic Area have met safety standards for reopening. Following multiple assessments and careful decisions, the Mount Everest Scenic Area is scheduled to officially reopen on March 1, 2025, to welcome mountaineers and tourists worldwide!
Due to the earthquake, for safety reasons, it is recommended that tourists prioritize the G318 and S515 routes. Travelling along G219 and S516, and the route from Gangga Town in Tingri County to Tashizongcun are prohibited. Tourists are advised to plan their trips accordingly and pay attention to safety!
As Tingri County is a border area, tourists can apply for the Border Pass in Lhasa or Shigatse. Alternatively, they can bring their second-generation ID cards to the Tingri County Government Service Center for the permit application to ensure smooth access to the scenic sites.
Recently, the temperature in Tingri County has been low. Tourists should pay attention to their health, seek medical treatment if experiencing altitude sickness, and keep warm. The frequent windy weather has affected travel, so visitors should closely monitor weather warnings and comply with traffic rules to ensure your safety on the Mount Everest Base Camp tour.
