Best Lhasa EBC Namtso Tour: A Chance to Explore Tibetan Culture in Shoton Festival

I’ve traveled extensively on a slow path to explore local customs, history, and culture. I decided to travel to Tibet and I wanted to explore Tibetan culture as well, so I chose this Shoton Festival limited tour with Tibet Horizon. It was amazing as I witnessed the opening of Buddha unfolding at Drepung Monastery and ate yogurt served with Tibetan barley cake. This trip covered Yamdrok and Namtso, two sacred lakes with their legends, allowing me to enjoy the breathtaking views of clean waters and snowy mountains while hearing stories from our guide. By the way, our guide is knowledgeable. He shared many local tales and customs with us. I’m glad that I chose this trip with TH because they planned the itinerary very well. The enriching and hassle-free trip was exactly what I preferred!

Strongly Recommended Lhasa Everest Trip During Shoton Festival

This Tibet trip with Lhasa Everest and sacred lakes is wonderful! We’re lucky to be able to travel there during Shoton Festival, one of the biggest traditional festivals celebrated in Tibet. We watched a giant Thangka unveiling at an ancient Monastery and many pilgrims worshipping and presenting Hadas. There were many locals selling homemade yogurt and singing and dancing. We’re happy to experience this grand celebration and saw rich activities. The views of Everest and Namtso are also mind-blowing. The entire trip was perfectly arranged by Tibet Horizon. They helped us apply for permits needed and book flight tickets to Lhasa. Our consultant and guide are both professional and kind. Thank you Tibet Horizon!

Tour Tips:

Knows before You Book:

1. Travelers to Tibet should have a moderate physical fitness level. Patients with serious hypertension, heart disease, asthma, bronchitis, diabetes, and cold should be restricted from traveling to Tibet.

2. Book at least 20 days in advance so the tour operator may have enough time to apply for and deliver your Tibet Travel Permit. Normally, it takes around 8-9 days to process your Tibet Travel Permit from the Tibet Tourism Bureau and another 3-4 days to deliver your Permit to your address in Chinese mainland.

3. A Tibet train/flight ticket is not included in our tour package. If you book with us, we can help you book your train/flight ticket. The train ticket to Lhasa is normally issued 15-60 days before departure. During peak seasons (from June to mid-October, during the Chinese Spring Festival and other public holidays in China), train tickets may be issued only 1-9 days before departure.

4. Price is based on double occupancy. Solo travelers who prefer to stay in a room by themselves need to pay for the additional charge of single room supplement. Please consult our travel consultants for specific prices.

5. Your airport/train station pick-up and drop-off in Lhasa needed to be arranged by the tour agency as foreign visitors are prohibited from independent traveling.

6. If you plan to travel to Lhasa via Kathmandu, please do not apply for a China L Visa in advance. You need to apply for a Tibet Group Visa from the China Embassy in Kathmandu via a travel agency. If you have your China L Visa, it will automatically expire when applying for a Tibet Group Visa.

7. Please read the Payment Methods, Terms and Conditions, and Cancellation policies before you book.

Knows after You Book:

1. Please provide photocopies of your passports and China L visas at least 15 days before the travel date, making sure we have enough time to apply for your Tibet Travel Permit. If you have other type of visas, please contact your travel consultant.

2. Make sure to bring warm and comfortable clothing and walking shoes for your Tibet trip.

3. It is recommended to bring spending cash for the whole trip. In Lhasa, you can withdraw money with a foreign bank card or change your foreign currency into Chinese Renminbi (RMB, CNY).

4. Travel insurance is provided by The People’s Insurance Company (Group) of China Limited (www.epicc.com.cn), which covers tourist accident risks only in China. Tourists are recommended to purchase additional insurance on their own.

5. Altitude Sickness is a common reaction in the plateau. Common symptoms include fatigue, insomnia, loss of appetite, headache, etc. Normally such symptoms will disappear in 2 days. You’d better consult your doctor and bring some medicine, such as ibuprofen, acetaminophen and nutrient supplements.

6. During your stay in Tibet, please obey the law and respect the local religion and customs. Do not photograph military facilities, and other politically sensitive areas; Do not accept any news media interview; Do not collect secret intelligence; Do not wave antisocial banners, yelling antisocial slogans; Do not use aerial cameras; Do not venture into areas beyond planned itineraries.

7. Souvenirs like knives, antiques, animal skulls, etc. are not allowed to be taken out of China at customs. Please don’t buy this kind of souvenir.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Ms. Fanning from the US, asked on August 27th, 2024

Can Foreigners Participate in Local Celebrations?

Hello! I’m interested in traditional Tibetan festivals and want to travel to Lhasa during a festival. Can foreigners participate in local celebrations and ceremonies?

Mr. Tashi Wangyal from Tibet Horizon, answered on August 27th, 2024

Dear Fanning, thank you for considering a Tibet tour during traditional Tibetan festivals and extending your question to us.

Foreigners are generally welcome to participate in local Tibetan celebrations and ceremonies, but there are a few things to keep in mind:
First, respect local customs: It's important to be respectful of local customs and traditions. This includes dressing modestly and behaving in a way that shows respect for the culture and religious practices.
Next, photography permissions: In some religious ceremonies, photography may be restricted. Always ask for permission before taking photos, especially when people are involved.
Moreover, cultural sensitivity: Be aware that some ceremonies are primarily for locals and may not be open to tourists. It's important not to intrude on private or sacred events.

Feel free to contact us if you have further questions regarding Tibet tour!

  • Mr. Bob from Spain, asked on April 3rd, 2024

    Traveling Alone in Tibet Possible?

I’m a solo traveler. I prefer to develop my own itineraries and travel slowly. I would like to travel to Tibet in August to attend the Shoton Festival. I read that one cannot be by themselves in Lhasa. Is this still true?

Mr. Passang Norbu from Tibet Horizon, answered on April 3rd, 2024

    Dear Bob,

Thank you for reaching out to us with your question about whether foreign tourists can travel independently in Tibet.

Currently, foreign travelers cannot visit Tibet by themselves. You are required to be accompanied by a private guide and vehicle. You’ll need a Tibet Travel Permit to enter Tibet and an Alien’s Travel Permit to travel outside Lhasa. If you want to go to places like Nyingchi and Mt. Kailash, you’ll need to apply for a Military Area Travel Permit. These necessary documents can be applied by qualified travel agencies. So, if you want to tour Tibet during the Shoton Festival, you’d better travel with a professional agency. We have a 9-day Tibet group tour to Lhasa, Yamdrok, Everest Base Camp, and Namtso during the festival, offering you a hassle-free and enriching travel experience. If you’re interested in our tour itinerary or have further questions, please feel free to consult us!
