How to get to Nyingchi?

Tourists can either reach Nyingchi by flight, train, or road.

By Flight
Traveling to Nyingchi by air is a convenient and time-saving option. Currently, there are several direct flights to Nyingchi Mainling Airport from cities like Chengdu, Chongqing, Xi’an, and Guanzghou. Six flights depart daily from Chengdu to Nyingchi, taking only around 2 hours and 10 minutes. Three from Chongqing to Nyingchi, taking around 2 hours and 30 minutes. Xi’an has only one non-stop flight to Nyingchi with a flight time of 2 hours and 50 minutes. Also, there is only one direct flight from Guangzhou to Nyingchi, taking about 3 hours 40 minutes.

Nyingchi Mainling Airport is about 50km away from Bayi Town, the downtown area of Nyingchi. If you book Tibet Tour with us and choose to fly to Nyingchi, our local drivers will pick you up and transfer you to the hotel downtown.

By Train
Two bullet trains run daily from Lhasa to Nyingchi. Z8901 departs at 8:40 and arrives in Nyingchi at 13:09 and C881 departs at 11:40 and lands you in Nyingchi at 15:18. Tourists can choose to board a Tibet train in other cities and transfer to Lhasa-Nyingchi bullet trains.

By Road
Traveling to Nyingchi by road is a popular choice for adventurous tourists. Nyingchi can be reached easily from either Chengdu, Kunming, or Lhasa.
From Chengdu, tourists can drive along G318 Highway. The route covers a distance of 1,679 kilometers, with breathtaking landscapes along the way. From Kunming, tourists can drive along Yunnan-Tibet Highway to Markam and then follow G318 Highway to Nyingchi. Lhasa-Nyingchi Highway is part of G318 Highway with a length of 409km. The road conditions are generally good, making the drive easy and comfortable.

What permits are needed to visit Nyingchi?

To visit Nyingchi in Tibet, travelers typically need the following permits:
Tibet Travel Permit: This permit is issued by the Tibet Tourism Bureau (TTB) and is required for all foreign travelers visiting Tibet.
Aliens’ Travel Permit: Travelers visiting Basumtso need an Aliens’ Travel Permit.
Military Area Entry Permit: Travelers visiting military-sensitive areas such as the Ngari Prefecture or traveling along the G318 Highway, need to apply for a Military Area Entry Permit.
