Notice: Self-driving tours do not equate to independent travel. Foreign tourists in Tibet still cannot move around freely. Organized and planned self-driving tours in Tibet must be conducted through qualified travel agencies in Tibet. Step One: Contact a Tibetan Travel Agency

Whether foreign tourists are visiting Tibet for sightseeing or embarking on a self-driving adventure, it is essential to coordinate all Tibetan travel-related matters through a local Tibetan travel agency.

2) Tibet Travel Permit: Tibet Travel Permit is a mandatory document for foreign tourists traveling to Tibet. This Permit can only be obtained through Tibetan travel agencies authorized to receive foreign tourists. If you book with us, we’ll apply for the Permit for you.

Note: If you are planning to visit Mount Kailash, you need additional travel documents, such as the Aliens’ Travel Permit and the Military Area Entry Permit. All the necessary permits are included in our travel packages.

3) International Driver's Permit: With your international driving license and Tibet Travel Permit, our agency will assist you in getting a Chinese temporary driving license and renting a local vehicle upon your arrival in Tibet.

Note: Even if you have an IDP, you cannot drive in China without a Chinese driving license.

Step Four: Pack Your Essentials and Set Off for Tibet

It’s advised to bring warm clothing such as thermal or lightweight down jackets. In addition to essential personal clothing, since you will be driving for long periods at high altitudes, preparing a pair of comfortable driving shoes is also crucial.

The best time to go on a self-driving tour in Tibet is during the spring and autumn seasons (April-May and September-October). During this period, the weather is mild and pleasant, with less rainfall and good road conditions, providing optimal weather and road conditions for your Tibet self-driving journey. Summer is Tibet's rainy season, with more precipitation, while winter sees snowfall, sometimes leading to road closures. Therefore, it is not advisable to go on a self-driving tour in Tibet during summer and winter.

Can I drive a car in Tibet myself without joining the agency’s self-driving tour group?

Foreign tourists cannot simply obtain a Tibet Travel Permit through a travel agency without participating in the agency's self-driving tour group for travel in Tibet.

Foreigners driving in Tibet must use vehicles that comply with relevant regulations and must be accompanied by a professional guide. They are not allowed to travel in Tibet independently or rent private vehicles for touring purposes.

What should I do if I experience altitude sickness while I’m driving?

If you experience altitude sickness while driving in Tibet, it's essential to take appropriate measures to alleviate your symptoms first.

Stop Driving: If you start feeling unwell due to altitude sickness, stop driving immediately and find a safe place to rest.

Rest: Minimize physical activity and avoid strenuous exercise until your symptoms improve.

Stay Hydrated: Drink water regularly to prevent dehydration, but avoid alcohol and caffeine as they can exacerbate symptoms.

Supplemental Oxygen: Use supplemental oxygen to help alleviate symptoms. Our vehicles used for the Tibet tour are equipped with oxygen cylinders.

Medication: Consider taking medication for altitude sickness if your symptoms are severe.

Acclimatize: If possible, acclimatize to the altitude gradually by spending a day or two at intermediate altitudes before reaching higher elevations.
