How to Get to Tibet from Guangzhou

For budget Guangzhou travelers, they can choose to get to Tibet by train. But they need to endure the long distance of 4,980km on the train. For travelers in Guangzhou who plan to get to Tibet, they need to know that there is no direct flight from Guangzhou to Tibet. They need to take flights with a stopover at Chongqing and Shangrila, or take connecting flights and change planes at Chongqing, Xi'an, or Kunming.

    Train to Tibet from Guangzhou

If you choose to get to Tibet by train, you have to be well prepared for the long-distance train journey, which will last 52 hours and 5 minutes. Train Z264 starts from Guangzhou Train Station at 11:40 and it arrives at Lhasa Train Station at 15:45 after two days. After the train arrives at Xining Train Station at 19:25 on the second day, you will transit to another train equipped with oxygen supply systems. Then about one hour after the train departs from Xining, you will be able to see the breathtaking Qinghai Lake. It is gorgeous even if it is in the evening. And then you can rest and wait for the sunrise in the morning. About half past ten, the train will start to climb to the highest point along Qinghai-Tibet Railway - Tanggula Pass. Most passengers will feel uncomfortable because of the high altitude sickness. Just make sure that you can take full advantage of the oxygen supply system. And once you feel worse and worse, ask for help from the train attendants. You will get to see the beautiful Namtso Lake before arriving in Lhasa.

    Flight to Tibet from Guangzhou

It is bad for Guangzhou expats to Tibet since they cannot take a direct flight from Guangzhou. There are only flights with stopovers and connecting flights that can bring Guangzhou expats to Lhasa. The flights with stopovers at Chongqing and Shangrila will take about 6 hours in total. But those connecting flights will take more time and they usually depart Guangzhou at night. So, it is not a better alternative.

However, there are two direct flights from Guangzhou to Xining, which will only take 3 hours and 15 minutes. And as the starting point of Qinghai-Tibet Railway, Xining Train Station runs several train lines to Lhassa Train Station. Thus, taking a flight to Xining from Guanzghou and pick a train to get to Lhasa from Xining seems like a greater plan for Guanzghou expats. It saves time for them and they don't get to miss a Tibet train tour to enjoy the picturesque scenery along the railway. Before the train tour to Tibet, they can take the chance and plan a tour in Xining at the same time.
