ContentIn the early morning of July 8, 2025, continuous heavy rainfall caused severe damage to the China-Nepal Friendship Bridge, an important passage between Tibet and Nepal. As a result, Gyirong Port was temporarily closed. To ensure smooth travel and border crossing at the Himalayas, Zhangmu Port has temporarily reopened.
Gyirong Port is one of the important channels between China and Nepal. It is located in Resuo Village, Gyirong Town, Shigatse City, Tibet Autonomous Region. With an altitude of about 1,800 meters, it nestles in a canyon area on the south side of the Himalayas, only 85km away from Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal. It is a must-visit place for travelers entering Tibet to Mount Everest and Kailash.
Zhangmu Port is located in Zhangmu Town, Nyalam County, Shigatse City, Tibet. Lying on the southern slope of the central Himalayas, it borders Nepal to the east, south, and west, with a superior geographical location. Because of the huge damage caused by the 8.1-magnitude earthquake in Nepal, Zhangmu Port had been suspended since 2015. Although it resumed operation in 2019, the port only allows freight transport. Due to the recent impact on Gyirong Port, Zhangmu Port has now been temporarily opened for travel.
At 5 a.m on July 8, due to the heavy rainfall, mudslides occurred on a section of the G216 National Highway in the Gyirong Port area, and the China-Nepal Friendship Bridge was damaged, resulting in traffic interruption. The local police have imposed two-way traffic control on the affected section, prohibiting passage. The time for reopening is yet to be determined.
To ensure safe, efficient, and convenient border crossing for inbound and outbound travelers and mitigate the impact of Gyirong Port closure, Zhangmu Port will resume passenger services from July 15. Travelers who want to enter Tibet from Nepal can choose to cross through Zhangmu Port.
