Tibet Travel Documents Update: Aliens’ Travel Permit Exemption for Popular Routes!
ContentConfirming with Tibet Tourism Bureau, foreign travelers will no longer need to obtain the Aliens’ Travel Permit for certain popular Tibet travel routes from June 4, 2025.
Aliens’ Travel Permit No Longer Required for Multiple Routes
This policy adjustment covers the following main routes:
1. Nyingchi Direction: Natural scenic spots including Basumtso Lake and glaciers in Bomi County.
2. Mount Everest Direction: Route to Everest Base Camp and Gyirong Port.
3. Shannan Direction: Samye Monastery.
4. Standard Route (G318-11 days): The traditional route into Tibet along Sichuan-Tibet Highway G318.
Regions Where Aliens’ Travel Permit Is Still Required
Although the policy has been relaxed, certain areas still require the Aliens’ Travel Permit:
1. Ali Route (Mount Kailash and Mansarovar Lake): Both the Aliens’ Travel Permit and Military Area Entry Permit are
still required.
2. Non-standard Sichuan-Tibet Travel Route: If your itinerary involves areas outside G318, such as certain side
routes or sensitive border regions, you’d better confirm with us in advance whether the Aliens’ Travel Permit is
needed.
Aliens' Travel Permit & Tibet Travel PermitBenefits of Aliens’ Travel Permit Exemption
1. Simplified Procedures: No need to wait for approval and collect the permit, reducing preparation time.
2. Cost Saving: The permit usually costs around ¥50 (about $7) per person, so eliminating it saves money and lowers
overall travel expenses.
3. More Flexible Itineraries: With no permit processing delays, you can explore more attractions with greater
flexibility.
Aliens’ Travel Permit≠Tibet Travel Permit
Although several popular routes no longer require the Aliens’ Travel Permit, all foreign travelers still need a Tibet Travel Permit to enter Tibet. Whether you’re traveling by plane, train, or road, this permit is mandatory. It must be arranged through a qualified travel agency, such as Tibet Horizon. It’s recommended to contact us at least one month in advance to book your Tibet tour and submit the relevant documents for the permit application.
Additionally, when traveling to areas above 4,500m in elevation (such as Mout Everest or Kailash), please be aware of the risk of altitude sickness. Our services include oxygen supply, professional drivers, and caring guides to ensure your safety throughout the journey.
