Ngari is a mysterious and breathtaking place with holy mountains and sacred lakes. The moment when you step into Ngari area, you will feel that the time is frozen because of those vast snow-capped mountains and pure sky with clouds. Known as "the roof of the roof of the world", Ngari enjoys an average of altitude of more than 4,500 meters above sea level. From the map, we will see that Ngari is located in the southwestern border of China, the western Tibet Autonomous Region, and the northern Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. It is next to the Hetian Prefecture of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and Bayingoleng Mongolian Autonomous Prefecture in the north, Nagqu City in the east, Shigatse City in the southeast. And the southwest and west part of Ngari is bordered with Nepal, India and Kashmir. Ngari has an area of 345,000 square kilometers with a population of 123,281.

Currently, Ngari Prefecture administrates 7 counties, namely Gar County, Burang County, Zanda County, Rutog County, Coqen County, Ge’gyai County, and Gerze County. There are total 7 towns and 30 townships within this area.

Ngari Road Map

From Lhasa to Ngari, there are two routes for tourists to choose - the south route and the north route.

South route covers a length of 1,190 kilometers on the road: Lhasa - Gyantse - Shigatse - Lhatze - Sangsang - Saga - Zhongba - Payang - Hoor - Lake Manasarova - Mt.Kailash - Darchen - Zhada - Guge - Shiquan River.

North route covers a length of 1,760 kilometers: Lhasa - Nyenchen Tanglha - Namtso - Bamtso - Bangor - Nima - Dongcuo - Gaize - Salt Lake - Shiquan River - Zhada - Guge - Darchen - Mt. Kailash - Lake Manasarova.

Road from Ngari to Karghalik in Xinjiang starts from Shiquan River and passes through Rutog, Li Yingfang and ends in Karghalik.
