Similar to the Xining to Lhasa train, the outbound train also offers three classes: soft sleeper, hard sleeper, and hard seat. Each type has a different level of comfort and amenities. Here we’ll detail on the features and prices of each class to help you choose the best option.
The Lhasa to Xining train has 2 soft sleeper carriages and each compartment has 4 berths (2 upper berths and 2 lower berths). It’s convenient for you to store your belongings under the lower berth or next to the upper berth. With a lockable door and spacious space, you can enjoy a safe and comfortable journey on the train. The ticket price for the upper berth of the soft sleeper is¥781 ($108), and the ticket price for the lower berth is ¥808 ($112).
A typical sleeper compartment contains 6 berths (2 upper berths, 2 middle berths and 2 lower berths). Due to the narrow space and door lack, you have less privacy and may be disturbed by passengers walking in the aisle. Specifically, the upper berth ticket price is ¥495 ($69), the middle berth ticket price is ¥507 ($70), and the lower berth ticket price is ¥521 ($72).
The Lhasa to Xining train has 3 hard seat carriages. Hard seats are the least comfortable because you can only sit upright on non-adjustable seats. The hard seats are the cheapest at only ¥224 ($31).
If you are looking for a more comfortable and private experience, a soft sleeper is your best choice. It offers better facilities and a more relaxing atmosphere. However, if you are on a budget, a hard sleeper offers a good balance between affordability and comfort. A hard seat is the cheapest option, but may not be suitable for long-distance travel. The following table summarizes the different characteristics of the three carriages:

Xining tour
If I want to spend a day in Xining after getting off the train, do you have any recommendations?

Mr. Tashi Wangyal from Tibet Horizon, answered on June 26th, 2024
Dear Mr. Jashon, It’s my pleasure to answer your question.
If you spend a day in Xining, you can take a bus or taxi to the famous Ta'er Temple in the morning to admire the exquisite butter sculptures and murals and experience the culture of the Gelugpa sect of Tibetan Buddhism; at noon, you can come to the historic Mojia Street, which is known as “the food heart” of Xining, and taste authentic stuffed skin, sheep intestine noodles, yogurt and sweet mash, etc.; in the afternoon, visit the Qinghai Provincial Museum to learn about the natural ecology and multi-ethnic cultural history of the plateau; in the evening, climb the Phoenix Terrace of Nanshan Park to overlook the entire Xining city, and the beautiful city landscape surrounded by mountains is unforgettable (Xining is known as the Summer Capital and Nanshan tourist attractions information); in the evening, you can go back to the city streets to stroll, experience the nightlife of the plateau, or have dinner in a local restaurant.
Of course, this is just a reference, and the specific itinerary needs to be formulated according to your actual situation. If you have any needs, please contact us!
