The kings of Guge replaced the city as a political center of power by establishing capital slightly closer to the Indo-Tibetan trade routes. But the monastery is still an important cultural heritage of Ngari.

  • Mr. Jackson from the UK, asked on June 25th, 2024

Regulations Regarding Foreign Vehicles in Tibet

Hello! I’m considering a motorcycle trip to Tibet and I want to rent a vehicle. Are there any additional services like GPS or helmet rental provided by the rental company?

Mr. Tenzin Jamphel from Tibet Horizon, answered on June 25th, 2024

Dear Jackson, thank you for considering a Tibet tour and extending your question to us.

Many motorcycle rental companies in Tibet offer additional services such as GPS rentals and helmet rentals. It's advisable to inquire with the specific rental company about the availability and any additional costs for these services. Some companies may include a helmet in the rental package at no extra charge, while others may have it as an optional extra. GPS devices can typically be rented for a daily fee and are useful for navigation, especially in less traveled areas. It's also worth asking if the rental company provides any other equipment such as rain gear, thermal clothing, or extra fuel containers, which can be quite useful for a motorcycle tour in Tibet .

Feel free to contact us if you have further questions regarding Tibet tour!

  • Mrs. López from Argentina, asked on March 3rd, 2023

Visit Lhasa with my Chinese wife

Hi, I'm planning to visit Tibet in January 2025 for a couple of weeks. I'm a British citizen living and working in China with a Z visa and Chinese residence permit. My wife, a Chinese national, will join me. I understand I need permits, but I'm unsure about the group travel requirement. I prefer to explore at my own pace with my wife, not as part of a group. Any advice would be much appreciated!

Mr. Karma from Tibet Horizon, answered on March 3rd, 2023

Dear López, thank you for your inquiry! Visiting Tibet in January offers a wonderful opportunity to experience local culture and traditions, with fewer tourists and more local Tibetans on spiritual pilgrimages to Lhasa. This provides a chance to interact with locals and immerse yourself in authentic Tibetan culture.

Regarding your question about traveling independently without being part of a group or tour, it's important to note that according to the Tibet Tourism Bureau policy, travelers must book their Tibet tour with a local tour operator to obtain the necessary permits. Additionally, a guide will be arranged for you during your stay in Tibet, and if you plan to travel outside of Lhasa, you'll need to hire a car and driver, as foreigners are not permitted to use public transportation.

However, with a reputable tour operator, it's possible to plan a flexible itinerary that allows you to explore at your own pace, especially after completing the day's activities. A good operator will ensure that your trip meets your preferences and interests while also complying with local regulations. Feel free to contact us for further assistance in planning your trip.

  • Mr. Schneider from Germany, asked on October 13th, 2022

Ride a motorbike from Malaysia to Tibet

Hi, we plan to ride a motorbike from Malaysia to Tibet. I wonder Which route has easier accessibility, entering through Kathmandu/ Bhutan or Yunnan (China). Secondly, which has a more scenic route? Thank you in advance.

Mr. Lhakpa Tsering from Tibet Horizon, answered on October 13th, 2022

Dear Schneider, thank you for reaching out us. In terms of accessibility and scenic routes, the best option would be entering Tibet from Kathmandu, Nepal. This route offers easier accessibility compared to entering through Yunnan, China or Bhutan. For a scenic and adventurous journey, entering Tibet from Kathmandu allows you to explore iconic destinations such as Mount Everest Base Camp or further west to Mount Kailash. The road from the Gyawala pass to Everest Base Camp offers breathtaking landscapes and exhilarating twists and turns, making it a favorite among motorbike enthusiasts.

However, it's important to note that driving a foreign motorcycle into China requires specific permits, including an import permit, Chinese license plates, and a Chinese driving license. Additionally, traveling in Tibet requires a Tibet Travel Permit, and there are limited routes available for foreigners to enter Tibet overland.

If you require more assistance with planning your Tibet tour, please feel free to contact us. We're here to help ensure that your trip is both enjoyable and memorable!
